View Full Version : Can I rebuild it faster and stronger?

I have made the decision not to upgrade my iPAQ 2215 any time soon. When I made the decision I started to take a really long look at the shape of the unit. It's kind of beat up and scratched up and not looking so great. The screen is OK, because it's never been without a protector, but the plastic molded part is not in such good shape. I was hoping that some one knew of a company that would replace the outside molded plastic part of the unit. I've had the unit apart, and I've seen the inside of it, so I don't think it would be that hard to replace. Maybe replacing the buttons and such would be the hardest part.

What is the common consensus on this? Is it a doable thing? A quick google could not come up with a company that could/would do the replacement.

You might try PocketPCTechs. It's not a listed service, but you could email them and see if they might have the parts and could do it.

Hay thanks Sven. I checked out PocketPCTechs and they do have a replacement cover for the unit. Looks like I will be able to make it shiny and new. :D

I did this, I sent it my 1935 into HP to shine up and they charged me over $100 8O . I probably would have spent just about as much at the techs for all I had replaced, though.

If you don't already have one. Get a Case for it.

I've got and aluminum case for mine from proporta (http://secure.proporta.com/proporta/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=492&t_mode=des) and it does'nt look that much bigger and is very light + your 2215 looks great in it. You should be able to get them in the US.

I made a similar decision. While my 2215 wasn't at all in bad shape and I had bought the PPC Techs side grips when they came out, I needed to spend some of the money I am saving by sitting out the current crop of WM2003SE units.

So, I sent my Ipaq in to PPC Techs and had them add an additional 64mb of RAM. I still don't know what I'm going to do with it, but as PC Mike says, "A man can't have too much RAM."

Great work, fast, high quality products and excellent communication with the customer. I can highly recommend PPC Techs.

Let me fill you in. Since it is really a RAM disk, it works more like an internal SD card than more RAM. That said, if you currently have most of your programs installed on an SD card, use some file explorer to see how much storage you are using on that SD card that is not in the My Documents directory. I'd be surprised if it is over 64M. Not amazed mind you, but surprised. Take all those things and reinstall them to the T2T Disk. You'll never have to worry about what SD or CF card you have in again. You can pop that CF GPS in and the SD with a zillion maps, and the Map program will be there. You can slide in the VGA card and the Powerpoint presentation SD and the PPT viewer will be there.

This really is a useful option on a single slot device, like my 4155, but it can't hurt you. Just remember that you need to back up the T2T disk. It is volitile and if you have a hard reset, the programs are gone. Hint: I keep the T2T cab file in the measly file store so I can re-initiate the RAM disk if I need to.

This works for me, so YMMV, but that's something to do with your upgrade.

Don't feel too bad. I started adding up the cost to replace the outside of the unit and its way over $100. I think I'll just end up replacing the front cover for $49.00. That should be close to $55 or $60 after shipping and such.

Thanks for the tip. I can always use a good discount. I have already invested in the new aluminum side grips which btw are great.

I do have a leather case which is a hold over from my Jornada days. It works, but its looking a little ratty it's self. I might need to replace it also. I guess I just need to go on a shopping spree techie style.
