http://neonode.com

Rumours, gossip and such are saying that Neonode is about to actually release a product. It is April in year 2002 and I first wrote about Neonode describing them to be "the hyped mobile device maker in Sweden". I also asked myself if their announced product N1 was "for real or not". Then nothing happened. Company management said the phone would be released at the end of the year and in December 2002 more news came along. I posted about it here and here. Then nothing happened.

Now, there is actually talk, in a Gizmodo article, about an actual product being released. Follow the link to Neonode's site and see for yourself. The first version of the phone won't have features such as GPRS, web browser, ActiveSync, MMS/WAP, or Email. The "Facts" page says those features will be "Available as an upgrade later, downloadable for free from neonode.com.". Downloadable GPRS? Maybe... I would be more than happy to see this actually hit the streets. But I am not yet convinced. You?

I think this is a secret test on human gullability...

From what I read on The Register this will be a limited release only (somewhere in the range of 1000 units) avaliable to Swedish customers only.

Given that this phone has been so long coming I think it rates right up there with the OQO. In otherwords Vapor Ware.

Here is the link to The Register's story

I read on Brighthand (I think) it's a hoax made by Sweedish web artists :?: :?:

OTOH OQO has 1,000 times more credentials with their founders and top executives/engineers being top engineers who left Apple, IBM, MIT, Oracle, etc. to found OQO; plus the fact they've shown more than a dozen working pre-series devices ever since CES last January. They attended major exhibitions including the recent CeBIT America in May and some later.

And 40 top US companies are field testing OQO devices in real life situations. (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040525/sftu071_1.html)

Not to mention it looks friggin' huge compared to the prototypes. It's bigger than the phone I already own, with no new features over what I can already buy. What's the point?

Please, let's not turn this into yet another OQO debate. Please limit the discussion to the Neonode phone...

read the spec sheet and youll see that it DOES include GPRS, and explains all the data crap.

Before you post... research for yourself.

You might want to do more research: Read the fact sheet - features...

GPRS connectivity - Available as an upgrade later, downloadable for free from neonode.com. Schedule for updates is not yet official. The upgrade is easy to perform but requires an Internet Connection (Broadband recommended) and a MS Windows Computer (XP or 2000) with USB connection.

While the radio may be physically included in the phone, it is definitely non-functional in the N1...

It's only dual band.
It doesn't have bluetooth.
The screen is an ordinary one like every other mobile available now (except for that it's touch screen)
The phone isn't smaller than many other phones available now.
This phone, even if released, is doomed before its release.
