View Full Version : What geek news sites do you read?

I was just wondering what other news sites people here read to get their daily does of tech news. I've been wanting to find some more sites to read with more variety, but I wasn't sure where to start, so I thought I'd ask in here. Currently I read Brighthand, Geek.com, Slashdot (I get the daily headlines in my e-mail, and currently have positive Karma!), and occasionally PalmInfocenter, in addition of course to PPCT. I want to find more general tech/geek news sites like /. and to an extent, Geek.com. Ohh, and if anyone else reads/posts on /., post your screen name, mine is Falstaff1596.

Add gizmodo.com (http://www.gizmodo.com) and news.com (http://www.news.com) to your list and you'll have my daily tech rounds.

First off, that's nowhere near my total set of RSS feeds. I have about twice that list. That's just the techie ones.

Anyway, I'm getting better at it. It used to take me about 3-4 hours a day for the first couple days - I can do it in about 90 minutes now. I don't know what I'll do when the fall rolls around, though, and everything becomes busy again. Hopefully I'll get even more efficient. RSS aggregation helps a lot...

Kevin - I'm using NewsGator. Fantastic tool. 8)

Kati - you're probably right. :|

Hey, Suhit, want to talk about your RSS list? :P

My RSS list has gotten out of control as Janak knows so well. I am listing my entire RSS feed list here (and the ones in bold are the tech ones). BTW, I had to reduce the font of the following list to keep this from becoming the longest post on PPCT. ;-)

Yes, I get absolutely no work done. I average about 1200 posts per day but the amount of time I spend aimlessly surfing has reduced dramatically. Seriously.

Where do you syndicate the comics from, suhit?

Wrote many of the scripts myself... though I get some from http://dwlt.net/tapestry/. I am thinking of starting a service where people can use my comic feeds. :)

Oooo, never heard of half these sites. Gizmodo is on my list of daily reads now. So many news sources.... So little time....

Woo! Thanks for the lists everyone!

Edit: What do you use to collect/read them on your PPC?

i've been using journalbar and avantgo for news but not really happy with those setups so saw juni using pocketrss. did a search and found pocketrss and egress as the ones most people use. i'm trying both and really wanted to like pocketrss (cheaper! ;)) but egress seems to be more "friendly" to me. i'll try pocketrss again before making my decision. pocketrss is $5, egress is $10.

There's also PocketFeed (http://www.furrygoat.com/Software.aspx).

I've been using Egress forever but I recently switched Today calendar plugins from PIToday to PocketBreeze and I found that the Egress plugin kept trying to rearrange my plugins to a layout I did not like even though I didn't use it. I uninstalled Egress and all appears to be well now.

i'll give pocketfeed a try.

pocketbreeze rules, BTW. ;)

that's me.

I'm back to using PocketRSS right now (still on trial with that and Egress). Loaded PocketFeed as well. Looks like PocketRSS has a good feature for me though, the ability to export my subscriptions so in the event of a hard reset, I can re-load them without having to do it manually. That feature might be in the other 2 programs as well but I haven't found it yet (though I've really only looked for it on Egress).

I love getting my news via RSS on my PDA, although my list is not nearly as long as the folks here :( I've been using PocketRSS on my hp4155 but I miss the ability to lock an article for later reference, something that I got used to on HandRSS on my T3. Any of these other RSS readers have that ability?

In addition to slashdot headlines and some rss feeds that I forget about I like grlt.com even though they are smaller they have good news. Well I read them mainly because I am a staff there and i am a co founder of the network that they are part of (the owner of that site and me founded it)
I'm not very good at rss yet...only reading a few feeds.
