I want to convert music videos I have in both [X]VCD (MPEG1) and SVCD (MPEG2) format to play on my Toshiba e805. The source file sizes are on average 50 and 100 megs respectively, so obviously I need small file sizes, but still need excellent quality.

What's the best conversion method and format to use???

TIA

Id say a combination of PocketDiVX encoder(free) with Betaplayer(free as well)

Nope. PocketDiVX encoder gives me 30+ megs on a single video.

Any other ideas?

Urm, how about you lower the bitrate?

Are you sure you are not encoding in VGA size?

How small do you need to get these videos? Are you trying to put them on the internal memory of your PPC? I think the best compression method for quality (in my opinion) is XVid for video and Ogg Vorbis for sound. You can try downloading VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org) and converting the files using that, but if you want VERY small files, you are not going to have excellent quality.

No it's not VGA size, it's 320x240.

when I first tried this a year ago, i got these vids down to 5 - 7 megs for play on pocketdivx player using some guide. can't find the guide now. didn't like the guide cuz it required an older version of divx encoder to be installed on my puter (3.11 or 4.x it think). Actually it did involve VirtualDub.

fizzle, i'm babbling. lemme just go find that old guide

thanx anyway fellas

okay, found the guide but i really want to get convert vids to divx for play on ppc without having to install divx codec 4.12 on puter.

i'm currently using windows media encoder and honestly it's working work perfectly, but i want to try another alternative/method.

any other ideas/methods?

digit.. first.. divx 5 is better then 3.11 in all ways. second, what is the guide telling you to do that you cant do with divx 5.x? Third, whats the length of the video clips you are converting? Btw, 320x240 is vga. and you wont get great quality 320x240 unless you use atleast 250kbits a second (w/ b-frames). small clips can be between 3 and 7 megs, while half hour (22-24 minutes) shows can be between 40 and 60 megs depending on the quality audio used.

svga is 640x480
qvga is 160x120

I think I used to hear 800x600 as like ultravga, but it ceased quickly and resolutions after 640 just wernt named anymore.

SVGA (super VGA) is 800 x 600. Has been for many years.
VGA is 640 x 480.
QVGA (quarter VGA) is 320 x 240.

barker, you havn't gamed much in the olden days huh. ^^

Well, if a game wanted vga, it ment 320x240x256 colors. 640x480x16 was possible, but generally useless, though im not sure if you could do 256 colors with more video ram. Every (And I mean every) game that wanted 640x480x256 colors required either direct video chip support (rare) or what became popular later, VESA support. VESA is escentialy a universal driver, some video cards had it built into BIOS (most ATI cards did) while others required the use of a universal VESA software driver. Also note this is DOS stuff. Windows and its wordprocessors worked well in 640x480x16, how ever same deal, if a game needed 256 colors in windows, SVGA was required.

So technicaly 640x480x16 is vga, but 16 colors was useless, so anytime anyone refered to svga, it ment 640x480x256. and 800x600 was only ever use in the obscure dos art program.

As for QVGA, I goofed, I ment to bring up the CIF (352x288) and QCIF (postage stamps baby!) standered capture resolutions. Infact, where did I ever hear of QVGA? oh yea... they usualy call ppc screens that.

mm... more midnight rambeling

While I seem to remember this to be true in the past, I don't think they really include color depth in the resolution "names" anymore. So now 640x480 is VGA, 800x600 is sometimes just called 800x600, but sometimes SVGA, XGA is 1024x768, SXGA is 1280x1024, and UXGA is 1600x1200.

Yes, Windows Movie Maker will make good PPC movies in small file size.

It won't start with a DVD, however, but with another movie file. So, if you want to start with a DVD you still have to do other things in between, before creating a .wmv file with WMM.

With some movies it might work to rename the VOB files on the DVD (provided they are not encrypted, copied to HD) to .mpg, put them in order in WMM, and convert to .wmv.

That rename option doesn't always work, however, and definitely not with subtitles-you would lose any subtitles.

Here ya go (it's more than a year old):
------------------------

DivX on PocketPC

I try to create simple instructions for you to create divix movies (from
normal divx) for pocketpc
You need: VirtualDub and Divx 4.12 codec
1. Install codec
2. Open in VirtualDub movie to recompress
3. Set in video and audio menu Full processing mode
4. In video select filters than Add and you must add "resize" filter (set
320x240 and bicubic) and "rotate" (90 degrees) press ok and go to compress
option
5. Compress bitrate must be set between 140 and 200 and of course it must be
divx 4.12
6. In audio Audio menu set compress 22000 mono or stereo but stereo larger.
7. Save (F7) in new file and it should works

Audio
Settings in audio
1. Full processing mode like in video
2. Compression set MPEG Layer-3 (32 kBit/s 22,050 Hz, Mono 4 kB/s)
If you want stereo set (40 kBit/s 22,050 Hz Stereo 5 kB/s)
Try with this settings if works than enjoy movies on ppc if not send post
with name of program whitch you are using
