http://www.audible.com

Audible is having a sale on all of their books. They are $9.95 each until June 21, 2004. The discount will be applied at the time of checkout. Figures. I just purchased one about 3 days ago, before the sale started on June 16, 2004 for $19.95. :|

Can I finally play my books with MS Reader under WM2003? That's when I got pissed at them, I didn't want to load their dinky little reader...

Audible may be a bit busy, because I've been trying to download one of my subscriptions and it keeps timing out. So, if you want to go there and buy a book, be patient.

No it is store-wide on all titles for all customers!
If I didn't have a backlog of titles to listen to I would be making more use of it. I did buy one $45 book for $9.95 though.

They are the same price or lower than books on CD here in Indiana. I'll take the portability and multiple format availability from Audible anyday. Plus, I never have to worry about the CD scratching or tape getting broken, because I can always re-download.

Does the low price also apply on iTunes?

I take exception to the "they are too expensive" complaint.
I am a big audible fan, been using the service for years. The prices are very reasonable on a subscription basis. I usually get two unabridged books (10-20 hours each) a month on the light-listener plan for $13.95 (I think it might be $14.95 now).
I just bought Xenocide by Orson Scott Card and Dark Tower VI: Song of Susanna by Stephen King as my monthly downloads. Cost - $13.95 as opposed to the "retail" price they charge of like $70. Plus, you can usually get a free MP3 player by signing up for a year!
So, yes, at their "retail" price, the books are expensive. But if you were to buy 6 of their books in a year at their retail price (say $30) you have already paid for a year subscription that allows you 24 books.

Ed Hansberry did an awesome forum post (see archives) explaining how to make Audible work with Reader on WM2003. I followed his instructions and have been using it with a T-Mobile PPC WM2003 and it works great.
I second Eric MCarson's opinion that Audible books are a good value. Try out a book or two for and if you like the Audible idea sign up for a subscription plan.
