This story tells me two things.
1. this fella is very impatient for videos for a device that's only 2 months old. Why would you buy a brand new launch mp3 player and expect the marketplace to be netflix?

2. His computer must be really really crappy. I suggest a buying some ram before you drop 250 on an mp3 player my friend. I run the Zune software, trillian, feedyourzune, winamp, utorrent, and several firefoxes with no lag whatSoEver. Come on now! I really like feedyourzune.com. I think its great software and I dig that it's totally grassroots.

I don't understand why somebody would return a zune, which has a superior screen if he's so obsessed with watching movies.

patience grasshopper.

Yeah, whatever.

"I got an iPod that doesn't have crippled WiFi" No kidding? Maybe because it doesn't have ANY WiFi. He's a smart one!

That was enough for me.

Because in this day-and-age a competitor, especially with a large screen, should launch with one? ;)

2. His computer must be really really crappy.
Hmm - maybe I misread a point - but it sounded more like an issue of the "hassle" a opposed to resources, per se. He comes across very much as an end-user who wants certain things to work, and the Zune doesn't do it for him without putting in too much effort. Part of the reason that Apple's subpar movie- and music-purchase model works is because it's drop-dead easy to use, if expensive.

Because in this day-and-age a competitor, especially with a large screen, should launch with one?that's just not reality and not how the market works.

Blizzard is by far the most successful gaming company in the world. the first day of World of warcraft you could barely play because of the crashing.

Products have budgets, even from microsoft and they have to generate revenue.

thinking first, posting after :D

and i don't think anything about feedyourzune is hard to use.

that's just not reality and not how the market works. Sorry, I disagree. The gaming and consumer electronics markets differ substantially.

Blizzard is by far the most successful gaming company in the world. the first day of World of warcraft you could barely play because of the crashing. Well, v1 game bugs are something that have gone back decades. On the other hand, if you buy a cell phone or an MP3 player, you expect it to work out of the box. Not that we're talking about bugs anyway, here...

Products have budgets, even from microsoft and they have to generate revenue. thinking first, posting after :D  Wouldn't Microsoft make more revenue if they launch with additional content? You want to hook users into the Zune Marketplace. A best-of-breed video selection would be a great way to generate revenue.

and i don't think anything about feedyourzune is hard to use. The OP never said anything about it being hard to use. I think people prefer solutions that work out-of-the-box, though.

I would equate the Zune video situation to more like Blizzard launch an online game, then telling you that they won't have any online gameplay available for several months or more.

I think consumers get more upset about the presence of a limited feature as opposed to the complete absence of one. It comes across as a "truth in advertising", I guess.

Especially when that feature (Wi-Fi) has been one of the most promoted features of the product.
