View Full Version : ActiveSync settings?

I can't get my mind around the way ActiveSync handles connection and server settings. (Partly because I still don't really know when the use of the word 'connection' means connection from PPC to PC (via cradle), connection from PC desktop to internet server, or connection from PPC via BT etc to internet server.)

If I use Options, under the Sync Options tab I see this:

Does that look OK, for a start please?

I'm puzzled by that last box. 'Enable synchronization with a server.' My AvantGo BBC News is still getting updated each morning (presumably triggered by the soft reset that occurs after my regular Sprite backup). Yet that box is unchecked, so why does it work?

Next, I have AvantGo checked as you see. But under the Schedule tab, I
have set Continuous, as you see here:

Yet AvantGo does not get updated continuously. It only seems to get updated if I do a manual synchronize later in the day.

In case it's relevant, I also show a couple of my AvantGo settings:

On that last one, for instance, I'm also confused about the last box
'Refresh all content at next sync'. Here again, I am getting fresh
BBC news from AG each morning, yet I don't have that box checked.

Hi, Terry~

I can shed some light on your last question only:

"On that last one, for instance, I'm also confused about the last box
'Refresh all content at next sync'. Here again, I am getting fresh
BBC news from AG each morning, yet I don't have that box checked."

What this check box does is insures that ALL of your content, whether it is new since your last sync or not, gets re-copied over to your ppc.

So, that is to say that Activestink is set up to only copy content which is new since you lasted synced with the AvantGo server. With the check box checked, you will get everything copied over again, even if it is the exact same material that was copied over on your last sync.

In all likelyhood, your getting new content each time because your news provider is posting new items in between each of your sync times.

I hope this answers your question, and that I've been able to explain it somewhat clearly. Good luck!

Refresh all content does exactly that.
It refreshes everything. When you set up the channels at Avantgo you have these options:

This is what dictates when they update. If you want it to update even though you usually only have it update once a week that is when you use refresh all content.

This enables you to configure your server connection settings (older - Mobile Information Server. Newer - Exchange Server 2003). This is mostly used in a corporate environment. This has nothing to do with AvantGo or it's servers. See this page (http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/previous/miserver/) for some details about Exchange Server 2003 (and comparisons of MIS vs. ES2k3)

Thanks for all replies so far. That last point is now clearer.
