Site Offers Superbly Outstanding Screenshots of OSs

Basically, it's chock full of screenshots of all possible parts of OS's, old and new.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/OSs.gif" /><br /><br />You can browse by <a href="http://www.aci.com.pl/mwichary/guidebook/interfaces">Operating Systems</a> or by components such as the <a href="http://www.aci.com.pl/mwichary/guidebook/components/desktop/full"> desktop</a>. What's really smart is this <a href="http://www.aci.com.pl/mwichary/guidebook/icons/components">grid of icons</a> visually comparing all the various icons for all OSs in one go. You can really see design history unfolding before your eye, showing who copied/influenced who. Wonder at Windows 1.0, look at Longhorn, study Solaris, ponder OS/2, mourn BeOS, contemplate NeXTSTEP and admire Amiga OS. So, take a trip down memory lane and check out the OS's you haven't seen yet and a few you knew too well. You know it makes sense! :Fade-color <br /><br />The site is recommended and well worth a visit. Only thing is, they really do need to get some PDA GUIs in there. :wink:

What an awesome site Arstechnica is. It's my favorite non-pda site. Forums are a great wealth of information and they have an IRC server as well if you need some quick help or just plain chatting.

As a gui designer for windows and occasionally mac, even these past four or five years have been huge (for people like me especially)... The fact that we have alpha compatability in windows 2000 and up is incredible. I'm preparing icons already for when our pdas are capable of it, the pocketpc gui should be really incredible in just two or three years.

edit: I mean gui designer as in I design graphics to apply to things. Not winamp or windows media player, but that sort of idea. Just a little higher up I guess you could say. (I just don't want to sound like I sit around skinning winamp all day :lol: )

Yeah, it's a great site to visit... they have some great reviews and discussions..

The GUI thing is extremely interesting. I enjoyed looking at all the different operating systems.. things have changed so much over the years. I'm glad we've come so far in only about 20 years. I think the next 20 years look very bright.

I'd love to see some screen shots from Acorn's RISC OS. Widows 95 borrowed quite a few things from it.

The first computers I played :D with were Acorns. Remember the BBC B

I've been visiting Ars Technica for yonks - shortly after they opened up for business. It's always good to know what's going on in the wider tech world. :D

I've grown as that site has - from serious overclocking to the current search for quiet. (And I think white text on black background looks great!) Almost as good as some of the GUIs featured! :wink:
