I have a number of DVDs (purchased by me) that I'd like to rip to video files to view on my laptop. I find the screen of a PPC to be to small for viewing video, and I generally have my laptop with me anyway when I'd want to watch video.

What programs do you suggest for creating the video file?

Psst....I've heard of this site, Digital Media Thoughts (http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com), where people love answering questions like this.

Right. I keep thinking of it as a site for people creating their OWN video/audio/images.

If this question is answered at Digital Media Thoughts - could someone post a link?? I'd be interested in hearing peoples thoughts on this as well.

Thanks!

Oh no, not at all, DVD ripping is a popular topic over there, and it's not people ripping their own DVDs. ;-)

What you'd probably want to do is rip the DVD to a single AVI file, then use the Windows Media Encoder 9 (free) or pay for a DivX encoder to create a compressed version of the DVD for your laptop.

We don't have a tutorial on how to do this on DMT yet, but I'd encourage you to start a discussion on it and see what the community thinks about the best way to do this. :-)

Cool - Thanks!

I quickly looked over these links - but didn't see any reference to a DVD ripper which can rip a DVD to a single AVI file. Any recommendations?

Try SmartRipper. To make high quality rips, I use SmartRipper to rip the DVD, then DVDx 2.2 to convert it to XVid, then I make final editting and compression with VirtualDub. Sorry I don't have links for the software, try divx-digest.com, might be there.

I like the information DVDRHelp.com (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/), they have many many guides and many many software tools.

BTW - I found a good comparison of video codecs by following a number of links...
