View Full Version : What Would Be The Worst App For Your Pocket PC

As I sit here working on my tax return :bad-words: I got to thinking that no matter how much I like working on my Pocket PC, I think any tax program would just be horrible on a Pocket PC. Ok, actually, I haven't started working completely. I logged in, check email, then started Tax Cut, successfully imported last year's return - took 3 seconds - and checked online updates. Then I fixed some tea, checked on my youngest son, perused my calendar, then had a thought to do this post. Tax Cut is still open though, so that counts for something, right? <br /><br />So, despite our general love for handheld devices, what app would you consider the 2nd worst that you'd never use on your Pocket PC even if it were given to you free? Tax prep apps are, by default, the 1st worst because it involves taxes. :bad-words: Now, where are my W-2's? That might come in handy. Hmmm... is that a chip on the wall? I might need to repaint that first, then I'll get right on these taxes. :bad-words:<br /><br /><b>Update:</b> Perfect. My calculator is dead. AAAARRRRRRGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! :frusty:

I think a Palm emulator for Pocket PC would be the worst

Easy CD or SETI@home for PPC would be rather useless. :)

Also, a desktop synchronization software written by Microsoft could be a waste of time… now, wait a minute!… :worried:

Have you ever tried to make somthing (web site) in Flash MX ? It was the only program that forced me to switch my desktop resolution hidher that ordinary 1024×768. I think that one who would port Flash MX for PPC would have to be awarded for the silliest person on the earth!

But, if there was one, we could play Mulg (http://www.harbaum.org/till/palm/mulg/)... Sniff... I miss that game so...

Resource Hacker, not that it's a PPC app or bad, just dangerous. I've been skinning Decuma lately, but the last skinned .dll I sent over caused a hard reset (twice) and I don't know the meaning of a backup.

Wait...and what about Direct connect-like software? I'd like to see anybody shering et least a few GBs, what is a requirement to connect to almost any hub :-)

Personally, I think the ironic part is that you are sitting in front of a PC with a Pocket PC nearby and you still actually have a calculator!!!!!!!!!

Taxes? All done, uploaded and got my refund (big one too) in 6 business days!

The worst part is I can't figure out what to spend it on!

How about a version of Kazaa for the handheld that would allow you to download and share over a WiFi connection, so you could just hop onto someones unencrypted access point, download and share a few thousand MP3's , and then have the RIAA go after the poor sap's IP address.

You'd have to have a pretty heafty memory card to do that.

Personally, I think the ironic part is that you are sitting in front of a PC with a Pocket PC nearby and you still actually have a calculator!!!!!!!!!I'm an accountant and the anemic thing on PCs and PPCs doesn't cut it. If it doesn't have RPN and a great tactile feel (HP calculators RULE) I don't bother.

If it doesn't have RPN and a great tactile feel (HP calculators RULE) I don't bother.Amen brother! I'm myself still using an old hp11c (http://www.hpmuseum.org/hp11c.htm) and a hp32s (http://www.hpmuseum.org/hp32s.htm) over my PPC. :rock on dude!:

I actually bought a nicely designed hp15c emulator (http://www.lygea.com/pocket15cdetail.htm) some time ago, but in reality using a stylus is just not as straightforward. Plus this software is now unusable on my new VGA e805 anyway (Hey Lygea, how about an update?).

I would have to say without a doubt the most unused application would be NaDa

How can you argue that?

How about a piece of software where you get a button on the screen that, when clicked, turns the PDA on?

What about MS virtual desktop??

I remember bragging about how cool my new PPC was when I first got it to someone, and they countered by saying how useless it would be for video editing such. I had no retort to that, it was disturbing actually. Could you even imagine attempting such a thing?

Okay, how about a WinCE1.0/2.0 emulator for the PPC? "Now you can finally install Pocket pcAnywhere again! Whoopee!"

Or a PPC bluetooth emulator for non-bluetooth PPCs? "Transfer files in minutes to your virtually bonded device! Bonding instructions provided for your virtual device in thirteen easy steps! Set up a virtual virtual LAN and stream MP3s and OGGs with ease! Low CPU overhead."

Or! An app (skinnable, of course) that puts a large picture of your favorite beverage coaster on the screen so you can rest those refreshing drinks on it. :) I like this thread.

*cringe* I use Flash MX as well - it's just about impossible to use in 1024x768.... It's nice and all, but all the buttons.. so little workspace *cringes and starts crying uncontrollably*

How 'bout start up software that gives this screen after power up:

"Your Pocket PC has successfully power on"
"Tap the screen to continue"

I thought you could do this already with PC Resource Hacker. I think I even enabled the save option in some demo app one time (was curious if it would even work)

I think the Meeple program that was just reviewed falls into this catagory.

Real applications that deserve mention:
1) The speach-to-text demo that Microsoft did about a year back that required the desktop to do all the real work. (The PPC was a glorified WiFi microphone.)
2) Screen-saver programs for Pocket PCs. (Can anyone explain to me why this is necessary?)
3) PPC Anti-Virus software. (There's no scripting on the PPC and AV software on the desktop snags ActiveSunk (past-tense of ActiveSync?) e-mail.)

Applications that should exist so we could make fun of them:
1) Pocket Adding Machine (Watch the 00 key. It sticks a bit.)
2) Pocket K-Pro (Run all your CP/M software on your Pocket PC!!!)
3) Pocket Weather Predictor (Due to the difficulty of the equations involved this program will accurately predict tomorrow's weather in only 2.57 days.)
4) Pocket Etch-a-Sketch (Comes with a tilt-sensitive add-on module for clearing the screen when you turn your PPC upside down and shake it.)
5) Pocket Cobalt (Turns off all multi-tasking except for specially written programs, cuts memory in half, and eliminates all Soft Input Panels except Block Recognizer.)
6) Championship Go Fish (Includes cheat codes!!)
