hello :-)

im planning on buying a ppc purely for entertainment purposes. from what i have been reading, the asus a620 would fit me quite well. now here is my question: can most ppcs including the a620 playback large resolution movie files?

ive got movie and tv files on my computer and some of them have high resolutions. are there any problems in general with ppcs playing large resolution video files??

You would probably want to convert them to smaller size and resolution for PPC play, for space and for playability.

My guess is that the bitrates would be more than your processor could handle... it would crash the application... you will need to re-encode the video to play it on a PPC...

My reccommendation since it is already in a viewable format is to use Virtualdub and encode it for PocketMVP...

There are lots of guides available, probably on this site as well as on the net.. the process is not difficult after you have gone through it a few times...

The Asus may be able to handle it, as I think they claim to be able to play 60 fps, which would mean it has an incredible DSP. But like the previous poster said, just to make sure it doesn't crash, and also to save a lot of space on storage cards you should reencode. On great guide is atBigD's Video, (http://www.bigdsvideo.com/) it was made by a member of this forum. Another very detailed DVD to PPC guide can be found at Pocket Matrix. (http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd2divx/) Both of those sites have links to places to download the neccessary software from.

Like ripper said, bitrate is going to be your bottleneck, and there are numerous guides both here (in the Multimedia forum) and elsewhere.

That being said, the latest version of Pocket MVP is capable of playing FULL 640x resolutions at full speed (ie: you don't even need to re-encode):

I have successfully run 800kbit divx at 24fps at 640X252 with no real drops. I have also run 720X352 1mbit mpeg-1 with no drops.

Check out the thread here (http://www.corecodec.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=511) for more info.

The catch? It only works if you have a Toshiba E-805.
