So, I have my desktop computer, as well as a PPC running full time in a cradle, and I have only one pair of speakers. I would really like to be able to keep both plugged into the speakers, but have some kind of switch that would allow me to change the audio on the fly. Without using a big stereo component, is there something out there that would let this happen?

I did find this Plantronics switch (http://www.plantronics.com/north_america/en_US/catalog/display_product_detail.jhtml?rootId=cat640035&prodId=prod3090125&productTypeId=cat3600586), but it's really designed for one audio source and two speakers (or more accurately, some speakers and a pair of headphones.)

Suggestions?

One solution would be to get speakers that allow for multiple inputs, like these:

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2,CONTENTID=5048

They you could just switch inputs on the control unit.

Great suggestions. Unfortunately, since I was on a little bit of a budget, I had to get the Z-640s. I'm pretty happy with my Z-640s, so if I upgrade in the future, I'll probably go with these.

In the meantime, though, maybe another solution?

If you go to Radio Shack, or Best Buy, I bet you'll find a Y adapter to have two inputs to your one source. Then just turn on one and mute the other.... or there might be an in-line controler at radio shack that you could use.

The line controller I'm thinking of is similar to those you see in line for some headphones to control the volume.

I personally would just mute the source you don't want to use, or buy cheap second set of speakers.

How about plugging the line out from your PPC to the Line in on your computers audio card ?

This woould work for you. I currently have a radio plugged into my line in port so I can listen to it through my speakers. All you need is a standard 3.5mm male-to-male stereo cable. Here are a couple Buy.com links for the cables.

$5.99- 2' 3.5 male-to-male (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10336271&hdwt=30506&loc=101&sp=2)

$3.98- 6' Belkin 3.5 male-to-male (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10031750&hdwt=30506&loc=101&sp=1)
