<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=2397' target='_blank'>http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.a...?contentid=2397</a><br /><br /></div>Geekzone report that RADIXS have shown a new handheld device running their MXI (Motion Experience Interface) 'OS'. The MXI 'OS' (Motion Experience Interface Operating System) is a client running on a handheld device. This basically acts as a display screen for the server, which runs the actual applications (think Terminal Server). It's an interesting idea. The software sits in a layer above the 'real' operating system (PPC mobile, Symbian, Palm etc.) and this allows the mobile device to receive any kind of feed you want to send it. <span>(Note to RADIXS, this is not an OS, it sits on top of the OS, it's an application).</span> :grumble:<br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/radixs.jpg" /> <br /><br />"MXI also allows interoperability between various platforms, networks, software and hardware components. MXI enables fully-fledged desktop applications written for Windows, Linux, Java, Palm and 32-bit console games to work immediately on mobile devices. Full Internet access via HTML 4.0 and Flash eliminates the need to strip down web services. "<br /><br />"Once loaded onto your mobile device, the MXI Platform connected to the MXI Servers establishes a seamlessly integrated environment that can execute and multi-task full-featured applications, video and audio playback, complete web content and more."<br /><br />The implication of this is that the device needs to be wirelessly connected at all times. We could be seeing how it works in practise in the not too distant future. "RADIXS has partnered with SingTel Mobile to trial MXI OS on the latter's GPRS, Wi-Fi and upcoming 3G network. Devices offering MXI OS can be expected during the second half of 2004."<br /><br />And what about this final snippet? "Sun Microsystems' office suite, StarOffice 7, will see its first mobile version deployed on RADIXS MXI which is completely compatible with Java." Interesting indeed, but I hope they give the users unlimited GPRS with every device shipped. I'd hate to see the regular mobile bills for someone editing a large document for a few hours with this 'OS'. 8O

(Note to RADIXS, this is not an OS, it sits on top of the OS, it's an application). :grumble:

When I first read about this "OS" it was September 2003. I thought the same as you, and noted that a OS is a OS, an application layer that acts as a terminal client is different. I actually got to spend time doing a research back then, and found some interesting things, that I quote from my original article (linked from the latest one):

"Because their website is quite obscure in terms of technical details and information, and without going into further details, I can only think this is a client-server model, where the MXI platform will be a client hosted on a Palm OS or J2ME mobile device (a smartphone by this description), with a server that will answer requests that can not be processed locally.

Doing a Google Search I've found more references to this platform. One of the source cites "...company officials showed how a laptop computer running on the MXI and acting as a server, streamed office, communications and entertainment apps instantaneously onto the “client”, an iPaq PDA. The MXI has two parts: one is the client OS, and the other part is the server OS..."

How is this different from other PDA (any OS) running a Terminal/RDP/Citrix/etc client to a remote system?

We beleive it may be a RADIXS reference design. I could not dig up any more info on this device. :? If anyone has more info, they know where to send it.........

So basically this is a portable thin client? I'll just stick to my terminal services with ppc for now. It is far from perfect but it serves me well. =)

Didn't we hear about this two or three years ago? :?

Not quite - it was 5 months ago. See Here (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17815&highlight=radixs) for details.

This whole thing is really designed for content providers - not consumers i.e. they will control the servers which push their content out to us on demand. l

I mean the concept of pushing application data from a server to a client over a data network. There were headlines like "the PDA that runs any OS" and so forth - I remember watching a C|NET video clip on it.
