View Full Version : Where are we all located?

Steven Cedrone
02-21-2004, 05:13 PM
I want to get the locations of all PPCT members by country. That means, if you see your country listed in this thread, there is no need to reply (duplicates will be removed). Who knows, maybe later on we'll try by city, but for now, just country...

I'll start!

U.S.A.

But I don't feel like going through the member list!

And remember, just one post per country!

So, if this counts: Poland

It's not the quantity that counts but quality, we all (should) know that.

And none of those you mentionned are countries but region of a country. South Pole is a different and quite interesting story with territories claimed by many countries, a sort of (Ice) Continent, rather than a country.

Hmm... depends on the rules that "Steve-o" has got.
But since the Republic of C/Karelia and other SARs are marked, Greenland should be too. As far as I know, Greenland is a SAR of Denmark and CIA WFB says the same:
Dependency status: part of the Kingdom of Denmark; self-governing overseas administrative division of Denmark since 1979

Nah, I didn't do it, the program did! But They are available to "Pick" so even though you don't see them as grey, they are (or should be). Actually, it looks like most of Eastern Europe is still grey.

Even though Greenland has had what we call "home rule" since 1979 they are most definately still a part of the Kingdom of Denmark and is - monarchly speaking - ruled by the Queen of Denmark. The same goes for the Faeroe Islands, by the way.

Both Greenland and the Faeroe Islands have seats in the Danish Parlament (two and one, respectively, if I remember correct) with should prove the point...

Administrative divisions:
metropolitan Denmark - 14 counties (amter, singular - amt) and 2 boroughs* (amtskommuner, singular - amtskomunes); Arhus, Bornholm, Fredericksberg*, Frederiksborg, Fyn, Kobenhavn, Kobenhavns*, Nordjylland, Ribe, Ringkobing, Roskilde, Sonderjylland, Storstrom, Vejle, Vestsjalland, Viborg
note: see separate entries for the Faroe Islands and Greenland, which are part of the Kingdom of Denmark and are self-governing overseas administrative divisions "

Hmm... depends on the rules that "Steve-o" has got.
But since the Republic of C/Karelia and other SARs are marked, Greenland should be too. As far as I know, Greenland is a SAR of Denmark and CIA WFB says the same:
CIA World Fact Book wrote:
Dependency status: part of the Kingdom of Denmark; self-governing overseas administrative division of Denmark since 1979

Who am I to argue with the CIA? Greenland and the Faroe Islands are now included!

So far only four countries out of Africa are accounted for. I believe that Africa (as a whole) has one of the lowest levels of Internet access in the world, so that may account for it. Taiwan's absence is rather surprising though.

I've actually relaxed the "No Duplicates" rule, as it is interesting to see where everyone is from. I was mainly commenting on the fact that a few countries that I know are represented by members, have not been mentioned here (Panama, Colombia, etc.).

Hey Steve,

I have followed with fascination the coloring of the map over the last few days. With my work, I travel a good deal internationally so it has been fascinating to see what countries "go red" first. My family and I lived in West Africa for nearly ten years. I'm not at all surprized that it has not let up yet. For most folks living in that part of the world the gadgets that we play with and take so for granted are nearly impossible dreams. For a third grader in Burkina Faso having a French reader that is totally new is like some kind of amazing gift. Now all of the above is not at all a value judgment as there are a lot of things that are more positive about living in West Africa than in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

It would be intriguing to corrolate your data with other indicators like heart disease or obesity and see if there is an relationship between PPC usage and anything like that.

Just blue skying here. Thanks for a fun post.

Trimac20
03-04-2004, 12:58 PM
And by the way, Perth (or most of oz) is not the place for Techno geeks. The few department/electronic stores carry a limited range (only about 2 stores in the whole of Perth stock the 4350), and the only place which has a pocket pc keyboard had none in stock and had to order it! So buying over the net is the only real option for the more specialised stuff. And yet another blessing: Perth is probably the most isolated major city in the WORLD. The distance from Perth to Adelaide (nearest 'million' city) of over 2000 km is further than from Mexico City to Los Angeles.

Very interesting thread. I'm in Utah, USA, and originally from Alberta, Canada, so nothing new there.

I have noticed that although Steven said early in the thread that it's "cheating" to count country of origin and that "it has to be where you are now", but I see a lot of inconsistencies in the posts. Some carefully distinguish country of origin, nationality, and current location, but others are not so clear. I've seen quite a few where the posted country doesn't match Location in the member information on the left. For example, St. Thomas Virgin Islands shows "Location: Michigan, USA", and Cyprus displays "Location: UK for the moment".

How are you handling these, Steven?

In this sense, and having nothing to do with being picky, I guess that in some countries and regions like the old Soviet Union PPCT forists are within an small geographic area. That makes me affraid that the "coverage map" could be yielding an impression that in some particular cases could be misleading. Obviously, this won't happen in Europe, USA, or Panama, to say some places.

I mean, Greenland looks large in the map, although PPCT is most likely not reaching but a very small part of it.

Just a non-picky thought.

That depends on your definition of "live". Since you're not living in Antarctica, it's a moot point and we should stop the debate until someone from down there chimes in.
