Your system is probably different because of different network cards and drivers. Nevertheless, I hope you find something useful here. Comments, corrections, etc. welcomed...As indicated in the title, I want to sync with my desktop and also share Internet access from there. The network consists of just two WLAN adapters working in ad-hoc mode because this is the cheapest way to go wireless. I use the built-in Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows XP."<br /><br />If you're looking to do the above, you'd just need a Pocket PC with WiFi access and a <a href="http://estore.shopplex.com/app/storefront.aspx?cat_id=366&inv_id=737256&modid=30214092059015&aid=5">a desktop WiFi USB adapter</a>. I've never gone this route - I've always purchased gateways - but this looks like a good way to do it on the cheap. Worth a look!

I seem to recall some guy by the name of Jason Dunn posting a message announcing the 15,000th member mark on February 4th. http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?topic_id=24065 Do you think that might have something to do with it?

"The Thoughts Effect" strikes again!
But seriously, it was written long ago, and not updated for PPC2003 yet.

Cheap may be a relative term. CompUSA has the Linksys wifi/router/switch on sale this week for $49 (after $20 MIR).

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product%5Fcode=282388&cmid=dsr&ref=dsr

That's pretty darn cheap, to get the router and AP and switch. Yes it is just 802.11b, which is only 11Mb but you guys with the 100Mb ISP connections can probably afford to spring for the $79 G,B version of the above, also on sale with a rebate.

I've never had any luck getting ad-hoc wireless networking between my PPC and PC to work at an acceptable level, and I've tried many times.

In my experience, PC to PC works well provided you don't shuffle too much data (my USB dongles would often just stop after a few minutes of full network usage, for example when transferring a large file). When it comes to using PPC and PC though, my experience has never been good. Sure I could ping any host I wanted, even get my e-mail, but web pages would time out before loading, and it was dog slow.

Either way, in both cases in which I've attempted PC to PPC wifi, I've tried and tried and tried adhoc before realising that an AP is the solution. Not regretted it. They really are worth the price.

I don't know how, but I haven't done anything and I can connect to my Rogers Highspeed Internet Service (installed on PC; but I can still connect when my computer's turned off) simply by turning in my Wi-Fi on the PPC...but then again, I'm not quite certain if I'm connecting to my PC or something else entirely, which doesn't seem very likely as I only seem to be able to do it in my room (and there's nothing else in my room with internet connection as far as I'm concerned).

I'm not sure if this is what this topic is about, but if it is, and if anyone cares, I still haven't figured out how it happened :| Not that I'm complaining of course!

It sounds like your PPC picked up wireless signal from your neighbour's access point or wireless router.

Hmm... 8O That's cool :scatter:

Strange though, the connection's stronger when I'm near my computer (or the modem, I dunno) rather than near the walls, ceilings, or the floor (yes, the computer IS against a wall, but that wall separates parts of my house, not the different suits). :|
