I know this topic has been discussed in depth (to death even: take a look at the Newton toilet paper roll (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12137&highlight=newton+notes+application+continous+scrolling) and here (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=164068#164068)) but, at least for me, it remains one of my biggest PPC quests - the search for the perfect note taking software.

The main thing that none of the note taking apps out there seem to allow (Please correct me if I am wrong!) is the integration of text and diagrams into the same note. Even Phatpad really seems to create two linked notes (one with text one with the diagrams rather than one note).

Is there some software gem out there that I have missed?

I use the notes app in Pocket Inforniant and it works very well for me.
I can add sketches to the notes and notes can be added to contacts or to appointments or tasks as well as simply being in lists.
So far I have not felt that I need any other notes application.
Since the notes app is part of PI it's effectivly free, which makes it even better.

Wow - I have found what looks like just about the perfect note taking software for my uses: Diddlebug (http://diddlebug.sourceforge.net/).

Pity it is for PALM :bad-words:

The functions of this little piece of software (and it is freeware at that!) remind me sooooo much of the notepad in the Newton it just chokes me all up thinking about it.

Now I am not going to jump ship over to Palm just for this piece of software, (although the ability to smooth out shapes is something I have missed when doodling on the screen) but surely the PPC deserves a real notetaking application!

apMemo looks like it will do what you need. Seems more or less the same as Diddlebug and is free!

PpcPad (www.ppcsoft.com) was mentioned here a while ago, for the low, low price of $1.49. It may be back up to the regular $14.99 by now though.

It suits my needs, but then I don't use my Pocket PC for extensive data input anyways.

After reading this post I decided to give both programs a try. I downloaded the trial version of PpcPad. Neat little program but there is one problem, after you jot down a note, you have to type on the keyboard a <file name>, this defeats the purpose of on the quick and easy.

I have not had the chance to try apMemo yet. This is because I cannot seem to get the program running on my PPC (Axim x3i) using the .arm files. There is no exe file when I move the .arm file set to my PPC to open. I do believe this program would be the most functional for on the fly note taking and reminders. If anyone has any ideas of how to get this program running that would be great.

It should be a .cab file extention that you copy over to your PPC. Then just tap on this in explorer (on PPC) and it will self execute and install.

after unzipping I have 3 files to move over to my PPC and that I try and open:

00apMemo.001
00apMemo.002
APMEMO~1.000

No .cab file. =/

Just move the cab file to your pocket pc and click on it. You are not supposed to extract cab in Windows.

Yes, those three files are the contents of the cab file. I believe the download is a zip file. Open this and there should be a cab file. Copy this cab file in it's entirety to the Pocket PC and then open it on the Pocket PC. It will self install.
