View Full Version : Anything that terminates apps

Although I'm using alot of memory in my 1945, I also have some apps on the storage card. Occasionally it locks up prompting me to "terminate" an app that I'm not using.

Just curious if there's anything out there that "actually" terminates apps I'm not using (why do these programs stay running?)

Thanks,
Phil

I think that you mean that apps minimize instead of closing when you tap the X. If yes then you can use iPAQ's iTask to close all inactive applications. If you want for the X to actually close apps, then there are several apps that will do that, I know wisbar advance does it. I cant think of any other freeware apps that will do that. Wisbar is used to skin, but there is an option called smart minimize that enables u to close programs by holding the X or minimize by tapping. PocketPlus does this as far as I know, but its not free.

Why do they minimize? I remember reading somewhere that microsoft did this to free the user of thinking about task management. Windows should automatically close the inactive apps once more memory is needed. The error message however shows that this doesnt quite work as planned.

Handy Menu is real good as well. It stays active in the lower right corner of your Today screen. The drop down menu offers lots of options, including exiting all or as many applications as you'd like.

It's also pretty cheap. :)

A lot of the free ones have been known to cause memory leaks or other issues though. Before you install one, do a search for it on the board and see if there are any posts about problems from it.

Pocket Plus is great, it's not free but it's not expensive, only $10. Give it a shot, it has a free trial, and as far as I know it doesn't have any known issues causing resets or anything like that.

I bought my girlfriend a 1940/1945 for Christmas and unless I'm missing something, the 1900 series do not have iTASK. But to add my2 cents, Pocket Plus is good at closing apps from the X

I'm sure this question has been asked before :P

Icbar/wisbar and the other suggestions will all place an X button which allows you to manage and manualy close programs. The theory behind why this wasn't included in the first place was that the OS ought to automatically monitor your memory and close programs as needed - though this rarely works as well as it should.

Batterypack 2004 also provides the ability to close/manage programs.

Alternatively, you can tap Ctrl-Q on your keyboard (or using a calligrapher macro for the same command) to force a program to close.

If you want a tool that will show you which apps and processes are still running, just like the Windows Task Manager, here's PHM Task Manager.

You can read more about it and get it for free here (http://www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/taskmgr.asp).

Thanks to all of you for your comments. What an incredible forum. Downloaded Pocket Plus and realize it's the one I had heard of and will meet my needs.

Again, thanks so much,

Phil
