http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=178748

Now I have seen it all. Microsoft has a KB article entitled "SMS: SATAN Causes High Memory Utilization in WUSER32."

Of course, if that is true, then how do you clear it up? Call Microsoft's tech support or have an exorcism?

Dip your WUser32 in Holy Water. :onfire:
If you use MS Tech Support, be prepared for a 666-dollar charge.

I'm sorry, but that's bloody hilarious.

And the picture of South Park's Satan adds to the effect.

Jolly good show, old chap!

I think we need the Windows logo where the skull is, though.

At least now we know the TRUE origins of the B.S.O.D.!

Should I be afraid that I understand that sentence precisely? 8O

Now all I can picture is Bill Gates dressed as the Church Lady from Saturday Night Live. He's saying....
"Sooo, who do you think made you want to use Linux? Hmmm, let me see, was it SAAAATAN!!!!!??

http://www.mdarwin.ca/humour/mouse-balls.phtml :rotfl: - though it has always been a joke - never a serious memo that some hapless engineer wrote. http://www.snopes.com/humor/business/mouse.htm

Yes, classic "urban legend", but still great... And funny!!! And, at the time it came out, there was no Google to check it on...

Hah! Reminds me of the way, at one point, if you searched on Google for "The source of all evil" you'd get Microsoft.com, 'cause a whole lot of webpages had been set up to link the site with that phrase. It doesn't work now (Instead you get a page complainging about the cancellation of Freakazoid, Animanicacs, and Pinky and the Brain; claiming that the head of the WB TV network is the source of all evil.), but it was sure funny then.

And yes Janak, you should be very afraid.

So, after all this time, all those people that said that Microsoft is the devil are wrong.

It was big news because of how the tool could be used by "bad" people...

Seemed obvious to me too, but I guess you have to keep in mind people's ages... this was probably a little too "old school" for a lot of people here... :)

Hey, that's one of the great things about PPCT - you gets all kinds of stuff on the front page - including things we can have a good laugh about. Every front page post isn't necessarily about PPCs or related technology. It's good to kick back every now and again. I like it! :way to go:

BTW - nice one Honda_Civic_Si. 8)

What is also funny is that I've never heard anyone use it in a bad way... but VBScript on the other hand.... the mother of all virus tools (especially the outlook viruses....)

Was it on Google News or some other news aggregator?

I remembered it from headlines here in NZ, but a quick google brought up the home page (search for SATAN). :D

Although the tool was *supposed* to be used by Net Admins to uncover vulnerabilities in their networks, it quickly became apparent that *bad* people could use it to find and exploit holes in networks...

That's true of any vulnerability assessors, though. nmap is another great example. I use it legitimately all the time to see how locked down my box is, but I'm sure crackers use it to find holes....
