The 3G (third-generation) network, which provides average user speeds of 300 to 500 kilobits per second, is expected to be available in many major cities in the United States this summer."<br /><br />They're planning to spend about $1B on the network upgrade. 8O This looks like it'll be hand-in-hand with that new 1xEV-DO Pocket PC phone we <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22872">linked to yesterday</a>. I'm a little surprised; previous indicators hinted that 1xEV-DO and 1xEV-DV deployment was to be slowed, but I'm glad to see they're forging ahead.

Except for the fact that bluetooth handsets are
practically non existant over there, I wish I lived
in the US. Our GPRS seems so last century now :(

Brian - I *so* second the desire for that - you just described my next Pocket PC. Any reason to suspect summertime for units such as this? Seems a little optomistic - at least for others to come out with 640x480 screens.

Summer might be a little optimisc. I do think that mid to late fall would be possible. I forgot were I read it, but I thought I did read about new displays with 640 X 480 resolution on a 2.8 inch screen. The screen is the only non-"for sure" in that list. Everything else is just a combo of other units.

I would say though, that if Samsung brought the m400 overseas (with a couple of upgrades) or in the XDA II went EVDO (which I highly doubt with the new release of the Audiovox 5050), I would buy either one and not worry about the smaller form factor.

A good friend of mine is one of the people here in Austin, Tx. that is on the physical rollout and installation of that equipment and their ETA is October... installed from now through this Summer, piece by piece, but complete and operational by October...
