WiFi Detection Time?

I have an iPAQ 5555 and it seems it is not detecting wifi access points. I signed up for a T-Mobile 24 hour plan and when I turn on the WLAN the orange light blinks with no connection. (As long as twenty minutes). Anyone else have this problem. Could it be my device or T-Mobile service.

I am finding WiFi access points in about 10-15 seconds....Perhaps there is no signal in the area you are trying?

I've tried 3 or 4 Starbucks and a couple of Borders all which offer T-Mobile hotspot service and no luck.
