View Full Version : How to make movies sound louder?

My apologies if this subject has been discussed already.

I'd like to know whether I could easily boost the volume of a DivX or WMV movie or by a way or another make them sound louder on my Pocket PC.

Right now I'm using the Windows Media player that came with the MS Pocket PC 2003 OS.

Thanks!

An easy way to do this is to pick up VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) and do a quick re-encode. On the Audio menu, select full processing mode and then select "Volume". I usually crank mine up to about 200%.

I'd recommend that you use PocketMVP (www.pocketmvp.com)to play DivX movies. In fact, while you're in VirtualDub, you might as well re-encode the movie to a smaller size... 8) There's a great guide at pocketmatrix.com (http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd2divx/#converting). The article was written last year, but it's still valid, except for the part about not using anything but DivX 4.12 - PocketMVP now supports the most recent version of the DivX codec.

I'm pretty sure it would be better to copy the stream directly. If you reencode it you'll be losing quality twice.

True, but I've found that it's not so bad when you're using the DivX codec. I've encoded twice for almost all the movies I have, and it's really not too bad. If I've got a file that's already DivX encoded for the desktop, I'll just re-encode for the PPC. The resulting file looks great, and it decreases the file size to a manageable amount (~200mb).

As always, YMMV.

We're discussing the audio stream, no? DivX is irrelavant in that case. ;)

About encoding videos twice.. I've done that a few times and gotten acceptable results. I'd rather always start from the original, but that takes time. :|

You're right, sorry - it's been a long day.

You can also use a headphone booster. Radio Shack sells one:
