I use a freeware app called 'Magic Button' that really closes apps with the X tap, and it has a 'Turn Off' menu item which shuts down the PPC.

Is there anything else out there that does both these functions?

Free is great, cheap is OK.

I use Icbar (http://www.ictinus.com/icbar/index.html) (free) and Handymenu (http://www.handango.com/brainstore/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=F7BAF1BF2D752FE4XF26A9D9C3C37FA6&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=79935&sectionId=0&catalog=30) ($2.99). Simple, powerful, and easy on the wallet. 8)

I use Spb PocketPlus (http://www.softspb.com/products/pocketplus/index.html) (US$9.95) for an X button that closes apps and the free Silver Power Button on the front of my iPAQ to turn it off. :)

Battery Pack 2003 does both of these - plus a whole lot more.
$14.99 on Handango.

I highly recommend it

I myself use Spb Pocket Plus (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/index.html) and Valksoft TrueToolbar (http://www.valksoft.com/TrueToolbar.html) and have found those to work really well together. I can close apps easy with Pocketplus and then Truetoolbar shows whats running on the bottom bar. It also doubles as a task manager which i really like. It also has a built in launcher so I dont clutter up my today screen using pocket plus. Truetoolbar will also allow you to power off the display, power off, soft reset. I really like it and am surprised it's not talked about more often here.

 The hardware power button... I never thought of that - Thanks !

Actually, I've used 'Off' apps for years, even on -gasp- Palms to decrease button wear by 50%.
