<a href="http://www.softmaker.de/index,en.htm">http://www.softmaker.de/index,en.htm</a><br /><br />SoftMaker will be offering TextMaker for just $11.11 (US$ <i><b>and</b></i> Euro$) on November 11 at 11:11AM German (+1 GMT) time for just 24 hours. Don't wait around though - once they sell 1,111 copies, the deal is off. Normally, TextMaker is $49.95.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2003/20031109-textmaker.gif" />

Am I the only one who finds this slightly creepy/weird, particularly from a German company? The Armistice ending WWI was famously signed at 11am on November 11, 1918, and some objected to the stunt of letting more people be killed on the battlefield to "hit" the 11am 11/11 time. And of course that armistice of German humiliation laid the seeds for a violent century...

Whatever, not many WWI vets left, let alone among PPC users...

I'm going to try and buy it at this cost. I don't do enough writing on the PPC to justify the $50 regular price. But $11, I'm gonna do it.

There are so many dates in Germany's awful history that people remember, it's kind of hard to find some date that is not tainted. For example, November 9 marks the opening of the Berlin Wall, but also is the date of Reichskristallnacht, or Reichsprogromnacht, as it is called now. Had we had know before (November 11 is not a "special", "marker" date in the collective Geman memory; we remember the dead on All Saints Day), we would have chosen another date.

Yes, the authors are from Germany...

But just remember this: If they wanted to pick a "creepy" date, I doubt it would have been a date in history where a German loss was commemorated...

Please, this is a great software product, instead of trying to read things into this, take adantage of a great offer...

For anyone who does not have TM, it's worth getting up at 5.00 Eastern Time to get that price.

What Softmaker should do as well is try to make a bundling deal with the PPC manufacturers. If high end PPCs had Textmaker and the upcoming spreadsheet program already installed, it would get rid of those "POS works better with MS Office out of the box" whines. :D

For those of you unfamiliar with German customs the official opening of the Carnival in Köln starts at 11:11 on 11 Nov every year!
It is obviously being offered at this time for exactly this reason (especially if the authors are based near Köln).

Look at this web site (http://www.koeln.de/karneval/karneval_eng_einf.html), or even better, this one (http://www.schonwalder.org/Menu_Pasta_Carnival.htm) (BOTH in English).

Do you need to have the desktop version of this program to syncronize Word documents with your desktop?
That's the good thing about Textmaker, you don't need the desktop version. You can just save the work on your PPC as .doc files and send them over.
Same with desktop Word files, just send them to your PPC and open and edit with Textmaker.
The desktop version of Textmaker would be good for someone who doesn't have MS Word. It's a good application at much less cost than going out and buying Word.
I happen to have the desktop version because it was an inclusive deal. I've never used it in anger though, I stick to Word on my laptop.

No. When you save a file, you have the option to save in Word 97/2000/XP format. The file can then be opened directly in Word.

No, Microsoft Word for Windows on the desktop will do fine. The current carnival deal is your only chance, however, to get the desktop version of TextMaker for US$11.11.

If there was PI and Textmaker for the Zaurus, that device would suddenly look rather attractive I think.

The other great thing about Textmaker is support for the HPC2000 platform. I purchased the latest MobilePro 900 and this application is just superb when you've got the keyboard/clamshell form.

No idea what PPC owners do with it on those tiny little screens... :D

TM on my Zaurus would be really COOL 8)

If there was PI and Textmaker for the Zaurus, that device would suddenly look rather attractive I think.

I used to think the same way, that if I had AF on my Zaurus that would be all I needed but then I got hooked on PI but now I can't live without both of them. But I now have so much software (Textmaker included) on my PPC that would have to be first ported to the Zaurus so that I would be able to use it. I think the lack of the great software that we enjoy on the PPC is a killer for the other OS's (palm included).

Once I found out that I could order today (thanks Martin for tracking this forum) I went to the TM site and bought another PPC copy and also a Linux copy just now. I use Sun's Star Office on my linux machine and it's great but I think that TM adds a lot of creature comforts to a word processor that Star Office and Open Office don't have. I think that TM is closer to MS Word than all the others but the complete Star Office is only $60 and Open Office is free so $50 for TM was a little steep for me. Besides the TM is fast.

After giving this some thought, I must say, you are right about this Jeff.

What makes the PPC a great device isn't the OS, which still has a way to go, not the hardware which is currently lagging behind POS and Zaurus devices. It's the great applications that imaginative developers have come up with.

There are a lot of developers who not only work really hard, but actually listen to the customers. Martin and his gang at Softmaker are a good example. Everyone loves the program apart from the price and now everyone has an opportunity to get Textmaker at a fraction of it's true value.

If it's installed in the SD card, would it slows down the application?

The app. is currently quite slow when opening a medium-sized Word document (200 Kb), and I am afraid that installing it on SD would make it even slower.

No, Microsoft Word for Windows on the desktop will do fine. The current carnival deal is your only chance, however, to get the desktop version of TextMaker for US$11.11.

Or if you don't have or don't want to buy Word, try OpenOffice.org. Seriously, version 1.1 is GOOD. If you're like most people you don't use half the features in Word any way, not that OO doesn't have a LOT of them, plus integrated PDF writing, and its FREE. It creates compatible Word 2000/XP .doc files as well that you can sync with your Pocket PC and TextMaker. I am no longer an MS Office user.

Yeah that's so true! But I also feel it's a combination of developer attitude and the fuctionality of the product that make a product great. You'll see that when awards (not just 1st place) are given out they are usually to developers who who don't just stop at developing great software but also develop great relations with their customers. Martin is a fine example not because he's giving away 1000's of copies of his software for peanuts but he also happened to treat his customers like people before he went crazy the last couple of days.

It seems that great software goes together with a great attitude. COOL 8)

I too just found out about it and went to the website. The $11.11 price was still listed and I clicked the shopping cart icon next to that price, entered my purchase info and then noticed the $49.95 price in the order. I figured it was probably just part of the standard setup but that they would only charge the $11.11 price since it was still listed that way on the web page for purchase, but I was a little worried, so... I then came back here and read the rest of this thread and went ahead and ordered it with a note saying I wanted it at the $11.11 price as listed on the web page and not to go through with the order if this was incorrect. I hope it comes out alright as I can't afford it today at $49.95 on my debit card. :(

Ahhhhhh!!! Missed out on the boards for a few days... would have bought this (for PPC AND Windows) without any hesitation at THAT price!!

They actually still have the price advertised... so I started the ordering process and thought I lucked out, but the regular price ended up showing once I got into the ordering.

*sigh* Still... kudos to Textmaker for making this possible!! :way to go:
I don't know what you did, but you can still order at the special price as the English order pages still show the US$11.11/EUR 11.11 price and will do for a few more hours. The German order pages reverted to the normal price, as 24 hours have already passed.

Thas was indeed a bug in the shopping script. Fixed now. Of course, we'll charge only the Carnival price for those that ordered at the higher price.

Any idea as to what the maximum wait will be for me, considering the time I've already waited? Just a guess will be fine - I won't hold you to it - just so that I could feel comfortable and stop checking my email every 30 seconds for the product.

Thanks again

There is a sense of irony that the people who were able to "jump the gun" and get their orders in on Monday seem to have their reg codes, while those of us who played by the rules are the ones who are waiting. :)

I am patient tho, and a few days isn't going to matter much in the long run anyway.

I'm not sure exactly when the non-european deal will end--I just put in a $11.11 order. First time I've bought software where my research is 100% community comments based. Well, I guess the low price also helped convince me. :)

Could someone tell us what the latest version #'s for the PPC and Windows versions are? I went for the combo pack for 22.22.

I had the software from earlier trial versions and I had a promo Windows desktop version already from a previous trial or special offer - but I decided to purchase the bundle.

If I can determine I have the latest versions, I can avoid the download - as I received my Reg code late yesterday.

Since I will be at work for the next few hours I can not DL and Active Sync from here.

Thanks to anyone who can provide the info.

mine was waiting this morning, the download was slow, but not painfully so.

I rarely really rave about pay software....but in this case I'll make an exception.

I've had the desktop version installed since April (and used the 30 day PPC trial at that time). The PPC version has (I believe) almost every feature of the desktop version. "Look and feel" is a hybrid of pre-97 Word, Wordperfect, with a smidge of Wordstar.....which translates into: No matter how long you've been computing, the Textmaker environment will be comfortable and familiar for you. It is a just a tad slower to load than Pocket Word, but unlike Word stands up to being left open (even with an open document) for days without causing problems....oh.....and when you close it....it really closes. It does take up quite a bit of memory.....but it does work well (albeit slower) from a card (if you're looking to conserve memory). I'm glad to have it back on my PPC....even more so at under $12 bucks!

Heads up, because Softmaker is going to do the same for Excel next year!

The current version is rev. 394. It was only released a couple of days ago so you should go ahead with the download.

I'm too much of a lily livered sissy to experiment. That's why I ask you hardcore PPC users to boss me around.

I was about to download the trial from Handango, but it said that the file was called somethingsomething"02," while my email lists it as something something "03". 03 seems better than 02, so I wouldn't want to be content with less than my money's worth.

Yeah
Textmaker 2002 is the current version, release 394.. This was a new release earlier this week, not sure if Handango will have that. If you go to the Softmaker site, www.softmaker.de you can download a demo version there as well.

There is a note on the site that the backlog is just about worked through, so your original link might work now as well.

I hope you and all the other new Textmaker users enjoy this great software. :D

Alright, so I won't download the version from Handango. However, I too saw that note on the softmaker.de website around an hour ago, but still cannot download my bloody bleeding bleeping program!

I'm getting nothing but Gateway Timeouts every time I click on the link. "Save Target As" results in the same outcome. Would that be indicative of my computer causing the problem, or would it still be problems with the site, or the link, perhaps?

Ohhhhh the humanity!

These suggestions may be of varying usefulness, probably both at the low end...:

1. Try a different browser.
2. Try a different computer on the same network if you have multiple
3. Try a computer on a different network (friend's house, work, etc).

Yeah it was fun at least for me and I'm sure for a lot of others that were able to get in on this deal the day before. Being able to download the day before was like winning two jackpots - one for the deal and one for being the first. I feel bad for the guys that had to wait but I've been too busy playing with my copies. Since I already own copies for both my PC and iPAQ buying another two copies was a no brainer. Now I have another two copies - one for my wifes V37 and one for my beloved SuSe Linux box Cool 8) COol 8) COOl 8) WAY COOL 8) 8) 8)

Anyway I just want to say thanks and I'm sure everyone appreciates this great deal - I know I do. I also have to look into this Carnival thing and put it on my calendar. Seems like a real blast. I just hope that peoples minds return to normal after it's over. 8O

i ordered late, so i'm sure i'll be waiting a while, but i am surprised that people who ordered 11/11 AM are still waiting. if its going to be 1 week+ the softmaker guys really ought to list something like "x of y (or nn%) carnival orders processed" on their website so we can all sit back and relax...

is the demo that is currently available to download the same as what the email will instruct us to download? i assume it is not since they didn't say "download the demo, and you'l get your reg code before it expires" i'd like to give it a try this weekend, but in some ways i'd rather wait if it will be a different download.

Is everyone using Textmaker for just Western languages? They don't yet have support for say, Japanese or Korean. If Martin is listening, are there plans inthe works for more languages? And just how many people are using non-Western languages?

We support all languages except for CJK (Chinese-Japanese-Korean) and right-to-left writing systems (Arabic, Hebrew). Full details can be found in the document "World Languages.tmd" that gets installed by TextMaker to \My Documents\SoftMaker.

Future versions of TextMaker will support the full Unicode character set. This is a major rewrite, however, that we will be _beginning_ in 2004.
