Well, now that I am finally in college, I find that I need to replace my trusty old Ipaq 3630 (may it rest in peace). I am extremely short on funds, and I am looking to buy a new PPC. I am looking at either the Axim, the iPAQ 2215, or the 1935. Any other ideas? The Axim (x5) seems the most likely, as it is the best "bang" for it's buck. It just goes against every fiber of my being to buy last year's model.....

Please help! Any input would be appreciated.

An X5 would be your best bet, for sure. Geez, you can get one for $226 shipped right now. How much did you want to spend?

I love my X5, but I tend to switch PPC's every six months or so. It's about time to sell mine and buy something else!

Its like a brick though! I would go for maybe a 19XX series as they are powerful yet cheap.

The brick thing is relative. Especially if you're not planning on putting it in your pocket.

I second that. To me, axim X5's size is just right.

Just to put things on perspective, I know someone that has both the X5 and the ipaq 2210, and he whole-heartedly chose the X5 (and throw away the 2210 abroad)

For price, I am looking to spend as little as possible. I'm "hoping" to spend no more than 200-250, as I will have to spend another hundred dollars on both a keyboard and a case for it. Size is not a huge issue, as I am probably going to use rhinoskin case for it. How do you get the price down to 226? Please excuse my naivety about some of these things.

Thanks guys,

Steven

Well if the size is not an issue, it is probably the way to go for ya.

go to dell.com and you should see some good prices there since the new models are out.

The X5 looks good, it's not too big. It's bigger than my 3955, but that didn't bother me. My co-worker showed it to me and it's not that big. It's not a brick.

Actually, I have and Axim and never thought it was too big until I got my iPAQ 2215. I really prefer its size. I rarely put it in my pocket so that's not a problem, but it is more comfortable to hold. It's lighter, as well. But it does cost a bit more than the Axim X5. Just in case this matters to you, the 2215 is MUCH faster, in my experience. I never upgraded the Axim to Windows Mobile 2003 so I can't vouch for how much that would improve the X5's performance.

It sounds to me he is going to be doing not taking since he mentioned buying a keyboard, keeping track of class schedules, and hten some fun stuff. I dont think upgrading to wm2003 will be that significant, but maybe i am wrong. thoughts???

All X5s being sold now come with WM2003.

Is there any reason you wouldn't consider the x3? $229 gets you the 300Mhz x3 in the form factor that's smaller than the x5. Since Christmas is coming, maybe you can get your folks to help chip in and upgrade to the processor to the 400Mhz.....

Good luck!

For some reason I was thinking they were still selling the wm2002 models and that was the one he was referring to.

I bought my Axim X5 (400 MHz) the week they came out last fall. This is my first PPC, but I've had time to compare it to others. You're not buying last years technology, since Dell is constantly updating the X5 and X3.

The HP 2215 is a great device, but it's a little more expensive. The HP 1935 is cheap (90 day warranty), and the 1945 has a yellowish tint.

The X3 is still fairly new, but I'd get the 400 MHz model. Stay away from Toshiba right now, since more than a few of us don't like them.

I carry my X5 in my jeans pocket in a Piel Frama leather case. No problems. Check out my review of the case below, and expect a review of the X5 keyboard in the next month or so.

I suggest getting a 400 Mhz X5 or X3.

Looks like things are starting to lean to the dell  It really is a good choice and cost effective. AS I said before, it will meet your needs. The good thing about a review from a fellow ppcer here at the forum is that you see them posting often and can good a good review.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all of your input. All of this Dell talk really helped confim my leaning towards a Dell Axim X5 or X3. Actually, I will probably just go back to using my *gulp* JP 547... *sighs* It will get the job done (I hope). I just hope that Santa is feeling generous this year!! ;-)

Thanks again for your input!

Christmas is next month so if Santa doesnt get you a ppc, surely Santa will give you some money and you can use it towards a ppc so it less money out of pocket
