I was given a pc card cellular-fax modem, but since I have a Pocket PC, it was of no use to me. Then I saw that there were pccard-to-compact flash adapters available so I snapped one up. Unfortunately, my modem wasn't detected  I had my P/Pc plugged in-charged, so it couldn't have been battery issues. Anyone else have this happen?

Just checking - you're doing this?

Pocket PC CompactFlash -> to -> adapter -> to -> PCMCIA card

I've seen a few reviews of these, but never tried one. You might be having driver issues.

It sounds to me she is saying...
pccard=adaptor=cfcardslot....or did i misunderstand? I have seen such an adaptor. If it isnt recognizing it I woudl reinstall the software, then go to the website and down load any of the latest drivers. wait, areyou running wm2003? if so maybe it hasnt been updated to work on the latest. might be a compatibility issue.

I was thinking more along the line of a modem driver. The adapter driver is critical, too.

Which one of these two do you mean?

If I read the original post correctly you are trying to use a PCMCIA (or PC Card) modem on a PPC with a CF slot.

I reviewed this device (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,7585) earlier in the year and it worked.

The key (as one of the other posters mentioned) is to have a driver for the modem on your PPC.

You could look at www.cewindows.net and checkout their hardware guides. If there the modem can work with a PPC then this site will tell you how.

Good luck

From reading her description, I think the situation is such that she wants to attach a PC card to a device with only a CF slot. If that is the case, she should be aware that only 16-bit PC cards (ie, non-CardBus PC cards) will work with Windows CE. The documentation (if any) that came with the card should say whether it is CardBus (aka 32-bit) or 16-bit.

Yup, I have a generic Compact Flash to PC Card Adapter. It looks like the one you reviewed. I will go on the CEWindows website and hopefully find the drivers for the modem (3Com Megahertz 56k Global GSM&Cellular with XJACK Connector)

Wish me luck and thanks for the help guys! :)

Some info I forgot to add:

Someone wanted to know if I was using Pocket PC 2003, but alas, I have the Toshiba e740 so we know that answer to that :(

Also, after checking the review Anthony did on the sleeve, I have the exact same one. I've been fiddling around CEWindows website, but haven't seen any drivers. I hope I'm not stuck with this modem. I ordered a compact modem card, but since this PC Card is a gsm cellular modem, I was hoping to somehow get a cable to connect it to my Nokia 3650. I use Bluetooth, but it is battery draining.

Have u contacted the manufacturer of the pc card to see of any updated drivers, adn also contact teh manufacturer of the adaptor and do the same. Go to the toshiba website and see about any downloadable drivers there as well. Sometimes it is just the combination.
Can you tell us exactly how you are doing it and what settings you have??

I've contacted US Robotics (they've seem to have taken over the 3Com modem department) via email and they directed me to their website where the drivers are. Unfortunatly, there weren't any for Pocket PC--minly desktop or laptop drivers.

No special setup; I have the crd in the sleeve and the sleeve in the compact flash slot. It's funny, but now the card is recognized, but for some reason I couldn't connect. Is there a simple dial-out program to use to see if the modem will work?

I dont know about a dial out program. The manufacturer of the pc card/adaptor would know what steps or tes is available. I am going to see what I can find out about this. There is something that is missing. I think there is the assumption that iw ould automatically recognize the software/hardware adn connect, apparently this isnt so.

Have you installed the software that comes wiht the card? it should not work with out software. I was thinking about it at work today. They all use software. I am wondering how hte pc card to adaptor to cf slot wihtout the software would work. They only work wiht software, so did you install software on your ppc.??

The only software available is for Windows (Mac too, I think) XP, 2000, ME, etc... No Win CE drivers as far as I can tell

I am at the 3com website, and I am wondering if this is the EXACT modem you have :?: http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase&sku=3CXFEM656C

I just followed up on Anothony Caruana's suggestion to look on cewindows.net to see if it is compatible. Here is what I found out.
some manufacturers have designed multifunction PC Cards, which integrate Ethernet and Modems in the same card. I am not aware of any PDA that can take advantage of the multifunction PC Card’s functionality since none of the vendors offer their own special drivers to support their cards
The pc card you are using is 32 and it is multifunctional. For certain if it is not supported by 3com then it is not supported at al.

http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/searchbyfile.jsp?fileid=all&os=22917&sort=prodnum&fname=&prodcat=all&path=download
Here are some drivers for windows ce from that site. Do you see yours?

My card doesn't have ethernet. It's the 56K Global GSM & Cellular Modem PC Card with XJack Connector. The label of the card is pink (mostly). I believe in order to use it with a cell phone, I'd have to purchase a cable (there's a slot next to the Xjack connector)

I have not seen anyhthing pink as you say on the 3com website.

I have two links here, you must compare your part number of your pc card to those on here. So dont get your hopes up until then

I've been to the US Robotic website. The only drivers they have are for desktop/laptop computers. The part number is 3CXM756. I feel I'm just up a creek without a paddle.

Thanks for all the footwork, though!

I emailed u.s. robotics to see what type of response i will get. I also went to the toshiba website to see if there are any download drivers there but nope.
It may be safe to say it does not have any drivers for a pocket pc :(
