http://www.todayplayer.com/

Here's a nice piece of freeware for those of you who like to play music in the background while you're working. While the playlist editor is full-screen, the actual playback program only occupies a small slice of your Today screen.

It's only available for Windows Mobile 2003 right now, but Pocket PC 2002 support is apparently forthcoming within the next few weeks.

SWEET! Janak, pleasedo let us know when the 2002 version comes out. This looks great. How's the playback quality?

Very cool. I will play around more with this later.

And ya just gotta love software that you can download to your PDA and install directly! :D

Just yesterday I was thinking what a good idea this would be. First there was the post about PocketMusic, and now this! You're all reading my mind! TodayPlayer is exactly what I wanted. Now to try it out. Oh, my today screen is crowded these days.

I've been using this for a like 2 weeks now (still on v1.02.00). It's a great app indeed. :)

Ths came first. AND this is transparent.. from the look of screenshots of the PocketMusic one, that isn't.

Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.

Until this player supports OGG, I will never switch from GSPlayer.

Have you tried MTux Today X? You can have 4 Today Pages. I use it and love it. Programs on one page, Appointments on another, Mail and Voice Mail on another, Bills Due on another. Fabulous.

It does support OGG!

It scores over pocketmusic (great as it is) as it is free for this feature and is so small on your today screen.

I've been pining for one of these.

I tried PocketMusic, but the today screen module is at best, ugly to me. Plus I've been getting short pauses when I use PocketMusic even if its my only app running(save Wisbar Advance and Handy Menu), I know kinda OT but I'm wondering if I'm alone. I have at least 10 mb program mem free on my HP 2210, anyone else with the same problems?

Back to topic, because of the bad taste in my mouth, I might get this instead if I get no playback problems like in PocketMusic, esp if it can be transparent. :)

OK gotta go back class now......can't wait after I get off school and work to try this baby!

Okiedokie, along the same lines as my question in the Pocketmusic thread, but are there any portable-audiophile-headphone freaks that would like to comment on sound quality? :?: Anything you have to say would be greatly appreciated. :)

rmasinag, if you surf a lot on your pda, try emptying pocketIE's cache.

This program is great and i can't wait for new releases. it still needs programable buttons and a way to shut off the screen, but it works perfect and doesn't get in the way of the music, man..

Things I look for in a music player for the PDA:

-OGG support.
-Programmable Button
-and be able to turn off the screen while the music is playing(and able to use the buttons while the screen is turned off).

Seems like I'll still be sticking with my Winampaq, until they come up with an update with those features.

What is so special about OGG support? I encode all of my music at either 192 kbps MP3 or 192 kbps WMA and they sound great.

If OGG is a quality thing, you're wasting your time getting Mark Levinson quality sound out of a PDA (be it through headphones or the mono speaker).

FWIW, having never used the OGG format and not being an audiophile, I don't know what's so special about it.

However, it took me a minute to figure out why this neat plugin didn't work right for me: I'd encoded everything in WMA format to save space.

Now I think I will give OGG a try. If it's worth it, meaning smaller files than MP3 with decent quality, great. If not, well, this plugin will come off the Today screen and PPC, no biggie...

Ogg's quality is on par with WMA, better than MP3, yet it's codec is free, so you see more players with it -- at least on Pocket PC.

You'd be surprised. My iPAQ 3870 had amazing sound -- better than the iPod I use now (in my opinion). Compaq did a stellar job on the audio circuitry of the unit.

Anybody have any idea what running this background app does to battery life? Any experiences?

Better quality, and vorbis is totally free - unlike mp3, wma, etc. See the faq (http://vorbis.com/faq.psp).

I have to disagree with you on the sound part ... with quality headphones you can get great sound from a handheld.

Reasons OGG rules:

1. Open source.
2. Better quality sound (IMHO) at lower bitrates.
3. Less memory for more files.
4. It's free.
5. Did I mention open source?

Open source? OMG, dont' tell me that the Linux nuts are multiplying

As long as I have Windows Media Player 9 for WMAs and Pocket Music/Video player for MP3's, I'm fine. And considering that I have a 512MB SD card for storing files while away and stream my MP3's/WMA's off my home PC through WiFi when I'm in (or outside the house on the deck) on my iPAQ 4150, space is not a problem.

Er, open source doesn't imply Linux.

Then don't use it. However, a 512MB SD card isn't that large. I'd rather use a format which I can use lower bitrates with, like AAC/OGG/WMA, and double the number of songs I can store. And finally, of the three, I consider Ogg to be best-supported on Pocket PCs.

(1) When I think Open Source, the first thing that comes to mind is a bunch of Linux nuts running around calling for Bill Gates' head. I didn't mean to imply that OGG = Linux.

(2) 512MB is large when you don't cram it full of songs :) My card mostly has apps installed to it and has around 392MB free. I rarely put MP3s/WMAs on it b/c I don't see the point unless I'm out in the middle of nowhere and want to listen to some music. Like I said, when I'm around the house, I stream music from my desktop PC, when I'm on the road, I listen to the radio or my 10-disc CD changer, when I'm at work I use my PC there.

Open source does not equal Linux. Go educate yourself a bit, then start tossing your opinions about, eh?

I hope you're not implying that all Linux users are nuts. :\

I can't seem to get Today Player to find any playlists on Storage Card2 which if my CF expansion sleeve. When I browse for playlists in Today Player Storage Card2 is not there. No problem with WMP 9. Any Ideas?

The built-in file requester I use has various limitations as to where it can find files. For example, it ignores files on memory cards that are within a folder within a folder. (I believe there are even more limitations on PPC2002.) To load such files, use the Playlist Manager, and click "++" to load the entire subfolder. Then delete the files you don't want. I'll add writing my own single-file requester to the list of things to do.
