I was staring at my Jornada 548 (while tring to figure out what device to replace it with that my Linksys Wifi Cf car will actually work on). I still have a Pretec 56k modem and a 340MB microdrive that wont fit into the Cf slot( Type I slot and the modem and microdirve are type II) Anyways i was thinking of taking a Dremel and removing part of the back so that i could use both Type II devices. Now:

1) Does that sound like a cool idea or incredibly stupid?

2)Has anyone else done some major hardware hacking and modding to add some more capabiliteis to their Pocket PCs?

Hope to hear from everyone soon

Shoulda made it a poll :D

"Thumbs up" & "Thumbs Down"

Akin to being prepared to lose everything in your pockets as a plan of action when visiting a casino, my thoughts on 1. are...

"Only if you're prepared to accept the absolute worse-case scenario"

If you're not, don't do it :!:

(Oh, and if you DO, then post pics and tell us how it goes, or went, as the case may be!)

Good luck. MTFBWY.

uhm, i have only heard of type II being backwards "compatible" with type I, so i suspect that if you only have a type I slot, it won't be just the size of the slot that needs to be fixed.
my guess is that the type I controller won't be able to handle your forcefully jammed-in type II card.

but i dare you to try it and report back here making sure to include pictures of the process.

Sounds both cool and a bit stupid
First of all, with a good PocketPC, you wouldn't need to mod...

Then, I don't know in which direction your CF card slot is oriented, but when I look at my CF slot (type II), then the connector is oriented in a way that the additional "thickness" of the type II cards actuallty reaches in the device, meaning if mine was only type I and I wanted to make it type II, I would have to cut out into the PocketPC, not just remove the back "wall". Maybe you should check this first, but then, I don't think there should be any differences between the two types, but I'm not sure about that... :google: Now I am: http://www.compactflash.org/faqs/faq.htm#What_is

Happy modding though :)

I dremeled out the CF slug that came with my 2215 so I could store extra SD cards inside the unit. Not a major mod but still useful.
Works great. I've got a card for business and everyday stuff. A card for movies. And one for games, ebook, etc...
I haven't had a real use for CF since I can use Bluetooth or the serial connection on the bottom.

I think it would have been easier to find yourself an Atek CF Pocket to convert that type 1 slot to a type 2 slot...

I couldn't bear the thought of hacking apart my trusty old 548...

mine

Anyway getting back to my post here

I would definitely get an Atek adapter for my Jornada 548. except for two facts. Atek itself doesnt carry them anymore and there are very few of these adapters on ebay. Anybody have a spare i could get or know where i could pick on up?

A google search finds a ton of them (not sure if they are in stock at all of those stores though)...

Click here -> :google: (http://www.google.com/search?q=atek+pocket+cf&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)

Around $30.00 (U.S.)

Why does it have to be canadian? just wondering:) My girl friend is canadian
I personally wouldnt modify anything. Sounds like trouble waiting to happen. Of course like was said, be prepared for the worst, so if it does happen, you will already be prepared for what actions to take
so have money ready to buy a new one. :)

Why does it have to be Candian?
Actully its just the hassle of exchange rates, shipping fees and the quicker time for me to receive the unit. Nothing againist our neighbors to the south but US retailers make it the experience for a non-US resident of purchasing an item from them challenging and expensive.
So my fellow Canadians ....any of you have an Atek that i can get from you?
But back to my second question...
has any of the PPCT member out there done any modding to their devices to add more capabilities? I do remeber a srory about adding the pocket keyboard from HP Ipaq 3800 or 3900 series to the HP 2210. ANy other stories like that out there?
