<a href="http://www.canalys.com/pr/r2003101.htm">http://www.canalys.com/pr/r2003101.htm</a><br /><br />HP took the lead in the third quarter of 2003 by selling just over 200,000 units. Second place Palm sold 186,000. Also of note is that the handheld/data centric market grew faster than the smartphone market did. Sales of data centric devices grew 34% over the same quarter last year while voice centric devices grew just 22%.<br /><br />"Palm usually performs well in Q4," added analyst Rachel Lashford, "So HP should not take this leadership position for granted, however, with the iPAQ h1900 and h2200 series, HP now has a much stronger consumer offering. There will also be several new smart phone and handheld launches in the run up to Christmas, which will all make for an exciting quarter in terms of potential shifts in market share."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2003/20031021-emeaq3marketshare.gif" /><br /><br />Of note this quarter is Dell grew to be large enough to be shown separate from the "Other" category while Sony shrank just enough to be included in "Other."<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2003/20031021-emeaq3marketshare2.gif" /><br /><br />You can read about the second quarter 2003 performance <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15395">in this thread</a> to refresh your memory and see how the market moved in the past 3 months.

Is there any data of this regarding sales in North America? That would also be very interesting to see. Good job HP! :way to go:

I find the graph and information very interesting as well.
I would also like to see the North American graph/info comparison to this graph, in addition, I would like to see a graph and info where ppc is in regard to the OS's.

I'm not surprised in the least. HP has really taken the lead in PPC development.. smaller, faster, cheaper (for the most part). Glad to see that the HP/Compaq thing seems to be working out.

Strange. I wonder why no other sites are reporting this info? Palm Info Center I can see, but Brighthand? They gleefully reported "Palm retained its lead with a 34% share, similar to its position of a year ago, but with shipments up 45%. Second-placed Hewlett Packard, with 25% share, lost ground, having only grown its shipments by 2% year-on-year." last quarter yet are sort of quiet now. Not too biased eh?

So, what's new about that? I for one am taking this as a sign how much PPC has gained in the recent quarters.

What's funny, you can compiled Palm inc. press release from the '99 to '01 trumpetting every one of this market share number from Canalys even. It was almost a religious duty.

but now, ... well It's wee bit too embarrashing to announce market share.

Hidden mouseover. "Come on, Palm. Say it! Who's yer daddy?"

Sounds like someone is hiding numbers. How can Canalys justify lumping 27% of the manufacters as 'Others'? I would like to see this data reorganized by OS not just device.

You jumped your conclusion too childish. You can click the link and see the original report. Nobody hide the numbers. The others should include Sony(Palm OS), Sharp(Linux), LEGEND(Pocket PC) and others.

I think the complaint was mainly that since the "Others" was not separated into "Other PalmOS" and "Other PPC", it makes it difficult to compare numbers of Palm vs. PPC.

It almost makes it look like HP purposely decided to delay some shipments in Q2 as they may have foreseen that they weren't goin to do so well in Q2-thereby showing that massive increase in volume. But thats just speculation, nothing more.

Like this quote from the CNet "HP slaps Palm in European handhelds" story:

A Canalys analyst pointed out that the fourth quarter is generally strong for Palm.

"Palm usually performs well in Q4," Rachel Lashford, a Canalys analyst, said in a release. "So, HP should not take this leadership position for granted...

Yes, soooooo, how is Q4 for HP? Strong too? What a surprise.

Exactly who is taking what leadership position for granted? Pot calling Kettle! Palm who?

But thats just speculation, nothing more.Well, Pocket PC 2003 devices (iPAQ 2215, 5100, 5555 and 1940) weren't available until the last week of June, so they did get a good Q3 jump. Q4 though the 4000 line launches and the 1930 is gaining steam having launched about a month or so ago. Rumors abound of a more powerful 2200 model too, probably the same price I paid for my 2215.

Why Can't I find any report in www.brighthand.com, www.palminfocenter.com, www.pdabuzz.com, www.palmonecity.com or www.palm.com? Even no report in bargainPDA.com?

hmmmm, maybe they don't like this news.

I think Medion is relabeled Acer devices if not the same as NEC devices. (Acer?Asus?)

I think of it this way: how many people have you suggested to get a PPC that was shopping around for a PDA? I think the times are just starting to catch up to palm and now they're losing ground.

Agreed, and I will still think that Palm will have hard time in Q4, the lower-end devices aimed at the average customer are Marketing focus, such as Tungsten E ($199), but I still hear people asking for a Windows based device, why? Because it is a windows multi media device, they love that I’ve seen that in real life. Comparing their lower end devices I am more confident that they’d chose an iPAQ 1930 over the T|E at the same price. However the T|3 could boom their sales! Still It’ll be interesting, way to go HP :way to go:

Yeah, I guess it must be a bit of a sour grapes thing for them after all the Pocket PC is Doomed articles they have been presenting lately to have to post some positive news.

Most interesting thing I found about that article was that it confirms Sony's flagging fortunes in the PDA market. I wouldn't be surprised if they tank in the USA this quarter too.

"Job cull fears at Sony"

It will be interesting to see how the above impacts on their handheld division.

Well, speaking for myself, I am never going back to "The site that used to be run by Wes Salmon" (formerly known as PDABuzz). I left there to come here and I am not interested in a thread there.

It could be argued that posting a thread about the competition on a competitor's website it somehow... deeply ironic.

These figures certainly put the dampers on Palm's claims though. Very funny.
