HP is offering a do-it-yourself fix now for the 2200 iPAQ if yours is one affected by the grips coming off. Boston Pocket PC has <a href="http://www.bostonpocketpc.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=1854&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0">an article</a> that includes the part number you need to ask for, which is #349036-001. There are also discussion threads <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18941">here</a> and <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17978">here</a>. The question is, will these new grips pop off after 2-3 months of use? I'll soon know. I ordered mine today and they told me they were on a slight backorder. I should have them by Monday or Tuesday.<br /><br />If you don't want to fool with any of this and have some spare cash you could get some <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19341">custom wooden grips</a> made for $40-$60.

It it possible to order these through the HP website???No, not right now. It is a warranty issue so there is no charge. You must pick up the phone.

OH, well that figures. So how long did you wait? YOu could have been putting up the info on here and holding, now that is talent;)
I dont think I would want wooden grips.

Just got off the phone. The rep knew all about the kit and was very helpful. Said I should have them Thursday or Friday.

Total phone time: 52 mins

You can also use the live support chat. I just finished, took about an hour all together, but my ear isn't all blistered from being on hold.

The first tier rep said "send it in" but I politely wrote that they had a do it yourselfer kit and gave the part number, and some reasons why I wasn't going to send my 2215 in.

The 2nd rep took about 20 minutes to finally ask for my address after "reviewing the chat session" but the final word was "sending them out"

I told him to have the engineers give me a call for design assistance. :D

So, how do you apply these new grips and are they made of the same material? If so, then it seems a little pointless.

Got my new ones today! Cool. The rubber feels harder than the first ones but honestly, the first ones could have been this hard then softened up over time and popped off. We'll see over the coming months.

Allow me to point out that though many people like to dump on Axims, the grips on mine are firmly attached and have yet to show even a slight threat of coming off.....and I haven't heard that anyone else's have either.....who's low quality now?

What are you talking about? The only complaints I hear about the X5 is the size. What does that have to do with this issue? Keep it on topic and quit flame baiting.

I found the HP on-line tech support to work well, too.

Here is the link : HP Instant Support (http://instantsupport.hp.com/euserv/jsp/regionselection_frame.jsp?origin=aci)

Just start out by saying you want new grips. They will ask a series of standard questions, so answer them even though they don't seem to apply. By the end she said I would have them in 3-4 days.

Thanks for the link... I wonder if people are having trouble like me: entering the product # and serial # results in error message. I'm on a mac so I can't have the system confirm the info from activesync.

Am I getting the product # wrong? Mine says 268898-AD1.

Hey Pocketpcfox, make sure you enter the Product # and not the P/N number. They are two different numbers. I was entering the P/N and also received error messages. When you remove the battery you will find all three numbers under the battery.

Got my grips today. Work just fine. Feel good! I called yesterday and they overnighted them to me. No muss no fuss.

But here is the rest of the story. Enclosed in the box was a new battery cover door. I mentioned nothing about this. Out of curiosity, I looked at my unit and found that one of the clasps on the old door had snapped off. Would never have noticed because my unit is almost always in its Vaja Case. Wow, HP service is thinking ahead of the curve!

Bravo HP. :D

Darn it. Still getting that error message. I'm ready to throw in the towel. Not ready to make an intercontinental call.

Anyone see any email addresses in the HP help pages? I didn't.

PocketPCFox, have your tried havigating the HP site and selecting GERMANY: Here is the link (http://welcome.hp.com/country/de/ger/welcome.html) Then navigate through the site to find the HP Instant Support? That might make a difference.

I just called HP this morning, about 7 am on a Sunday. I was prepared to be on hold for an hour and it ended up being about 30 seconds. It took me about 10 minutes to give him my information. English was clearly his second language. I had to spell everything for him (including "Iowa").

I told him about the rubber grip problem. He said the HP was working on a fix and it should be coming out very shortly. Then I told him the part number for the kit (almost like a secret handshake). I asked him if this was the fix or the same exact set of grips. He said that they are exactly the same as the originals. If you register on HP's website, you will be notified when the new grips are available. (http://www.register.hp.com)

He made it fairly clear to me that HP was well aware of the issue and that they were working on a fix. I hope so. The reason I bought an iPaq over others was because of it's history of quality of construction and level of service. Any company can make a mistake, it's how they handle correcting it is what really counts!

a little bit off-topic here....

i'm about to buy myself a 2215 and i was just curious if ever it was mentioned (by the HP tech) that only a batch of the ipaqs have this grip problem?

did they release a memo on what serial numbers to look out for when buying a new 2215?

i am hoping to buy a 2215 with the new improved grips already. i'm from the philippines and i'm not certain if HP has local support as good as yours there.

I went to the online support and the person who was helping me said that they only offer help to North America. I said that Canada is in North America, and she gave me a phone number and left. This is so annoying especially when they had a selection for your country, which I chose Canada, and then I had to wait for 30 minutes to find out they dont support me there! Humph.

Phoned them up, went through 5 redirects, 5 stupid technical advisors. They all gave me the wrong phone numbers, and they all sent me to the US lines. Wasted about 2 hours of my time, when I hung up and went to the Hp.ca and found the number for myself and got myself some grips! Yeah, they should come before friday! :D

I ended up getting the same exact grips. They also shipped two sets by accident.

There are the same, so really, you could be ordering new grips every two months, what a pain. They need to create something strong and long lasting, like metal (that wont snap)

-Justin.

I recieved a pair and they are the same
