My experiences with bluetooth have been nothing but a pleasure, especially with the help of Geek Zone. (Although I would like to think that I am not a Geek, people are actually jealous of my Ipaq)

Anyways, with Bluetooth I can now:

1. Browse the internet in my house wireless, not too bad speeds
2. Activesync FLAWLESSLY every time
3. Use the Remote Control Display Host wirelessly going through ActiveSync, via Bluetooth to my device. I can type things into Word and then have my brother read it in his room. Nice feature!
4. Chat on MSN Messenger over my house
5. And move files back and forwards with my Computer

I am really impressed with the "mini wifi" features that bluetooth can give me. The only problem so far is the range on my ipaq! I wish I could utilize the 100meter range my Bluetooth Dongle puts out. Then I would be one happy camper!

:D :D

Has any one managed to get close to the famous 100meters range from these USB Class 1 BT Adapters?

Honda, what kind of ranges do you get with your current setup?

The 100m range is a theoretical maximum - not something you should expect to get. In tests the maximum range I've ever got between two (Class 1) Bluetooth devices was approx. 50 metres.

Of course in an ideal clean environement, without walls, stray radio signals, electrical interference etc. one could get more...!

Im getting about the 10 meter range my iPAQ can handle right now. It is sad because I spent the extra money on the 100 meter range BT Dongle. Hmm.

Anyways, it works nicely for me.

:D

Now, only if I can get Class 1 on a pda. Then I would be extremely happy. And going through walls slows down the connection too :(

What dongle did you get?
I was thinking of getting one, but might end up just getting a Wifi card..

The newest Belkin 100 meter Dongle,

Look <a href="http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=126336">
here </a>

I have the Version 2, the latest out. They are discontinuing(I think) the older one because Ver. 2 is much more compact and smaller. :D

Remeber, your dongle might be Class 1 but your iPaq isn't. 10 meters is pretty good. I tried saetting up BT and coouldn't get through two walls into my Living Room.

Here's a question for you Bluetooth guys:

What do you think about Bluetooth Access Points?

The only thing I'm concerned about with using a Bluetooth dongle is that I'd have to rely on the computer that it is attached to to share services like the Internet connection (ICS), and other network shared access. That's why I've been looking at setting up a Bluetooth access point to support Bluetooth devices. I know Bluetooth access points are considerably more expensive than a dongle, but each Bluetooth device would be more like an independant network device, instead of a devices that depend on another device for internet access and network shares.

Any thoughts?

It can be a good idea, but for me I wouldnt need one. The expense overrules the functionality. I don't think Ill need Bluetooth if my PC is off, it rarely is anyways. And that is the bad thing about BT on my ipaq, it is 10 meters, my dongle is 100 meters!

Honda, you forgot streaming video from the PC to the ipaq over bluetooth

Right! and I bet there is a lot more too!

This may be a silly question, but this means that getting a 100 m dongle is useless since most devices only have a range of only 10 m, right?

JustinGTP

Yes. But if you have other devices that CAN go the 100meters, why not hey? W?BIC!!

True, if you can, go ahead and get the 100 meter dongle for such reasons. It certainly isnt going to hurt. Now we shall wait and see what hondas report is on the streaming video:)hehe

If you don't mind Honda, could you try streaming music too?

Thanks in advance

Justin: After reading all the BT stuff today, I'm slowly starting to crumple. So my questions are: Where'd you get the dongle? And how much? And does it look like this (http://www.compusmart.com/product.asp?CatalogID=0&SupplierPartID=026023) or like the picture on the Belkin site?

The dongle was $80 Canadian.

No, I have Version 2, the newest and better one out without the antenna.

I think it is worth it for the wireless conectivity, if you dont plan to go that far with it because most pocket pcs have only a 10 meter range.

I got the dongle from Compusmart, they do sell the newest one. I live in Calgary. They had excellent drivers, the Widcomm, and with the help of tutorials, I get it working perfectly now. The connection may drop once or twice, but you can easily reconnect again.

Any more questions, just ask and maybe I can answer it! :D

Hey I just want to know if you know whats the range of my e74o's Bt... Because I'm sure that my living room's more than 10 metres away from my Bluetooth enabled PC and I can wirelessly sync and surf the internet from there... (My uncle lent me his Billionton USB BT) and It's working fine beyond 10 metres...

u said your 740....I am assuming the toshiba e740, I dont remember that coming with bt. That is what you are asking, right? The range of bt on your e740? I know it had wi fi on it, you are using a cf card for the bt? if you want to know the range you can easily measure that for yourself:) why not test to see the furthest range to see when it goes bad and then when it drops?

Just if it works with Win2000? But I assume you have XP and Wnidows 2000 doesn't work with BT out of the box, so I guess I'll be doing some research later today.

Yeah. I have Windows XP Pro, but Im sure that it may work with 2000. Windows XP makes it so easy to connect though!

The belkin class 1 BT adapter (with the flip up antenna) works on Windows 2000 Server.
