Just curious to know how much we have really spent besides the actual pocketPC we originally purchased. I mean, I had my goal to spend only $400 and by now I have spent over $800 :( with the wireless network set-up at home and all. We can't get enough of those little gadgets, can't we  ?

Good question.

When I bought my first PDA -- my hp1910 -- back in March, I had thought I'd spend maybe another $100 or so beyond the $300 retail price of the unit.

What I didn't realize is how versatile a PPC really is, and how many things I could do with it! :)

But all of that came at a cost. I've probably come close to doubling my hardware expensive by buying all the programs I have on my PPC. That was certainly more than I had though I'd spend...but it makes me very glad I only bought a $300 PPC and not a $600 one! It's startling to think that you can spend $1000 on a top-end PPC and all the software that makes it fun, even essential, to use.

I agree that utilizing a Pocket PC can get expensive.

When I upgraded last December from a Casio E125 to a Maestro, I promised my wife I would not spend more than $500.

Since then my Pocket PC purchases look like this:

Maestro $150
512mb CF $ 85
Wifi CF $109
PPCT Membership $ 36
Vaja case $ 66
Battery Pack $ 45
USB charger cable $ 14

Total $505

This doesn't include the Wifi setup in the house since I had originally installed it for our laptop usage. I also had a 128mg CF card but now use it for a digital camera (if it is not being used by the Pocket PC, then it doesn't go against it).

On the positive side, as long as my next Pocket PC has a CF slot and isn't to big for my pda pouch, I will only need to purchase another USB charging/syncing cable with my future pda purchase in another year or so.

Of course if the 512mg SD card drops below $100.....

I probably have my e740 ($500) and about $500 in accessories

Toshiba BT Card
Toshiba External Pak (USB/VGA out)
Multiple CF Memory Cards
CF Modem (for travelling)
CF Lan Card (for travelling)
Handheld Planet Case

Wow ... never thought about it that way ...

Eeek. I know it's been a *lot* of money.

PPC - $300
Software - approx. $200
MiniSync - $30
Case - $30
Screen protectors - $12
Memory cards - $180
eBooks - $50 (wild guess here)

Total - $802 8O 8O 8O

EDIT: plus new desktop computer (If not for my PPC, I could've stuck with my ancient laptop). Tack on another $469.

Its the darn software, i cant seem to resist all those great little programs that seem to add up to $$$$$ in a very short period of time. Just today i downloaded about $75 worth of stuff.

It is fun though. :D

That is exactly what I was going to point out. It's crazy how blind we go when we see software that makes the pocketPC so useful and very customizable for your taste.
Then again, I have wasted lots of money for wanting to have the "new" items for a high price instead of waiting until the price drops, but then I wouldn't be as "cool" as I think I am 8)

Nah. Walk around in midtown NY, where people wear clothes that cost more than mine, my laptop, and my PDA and its gadgets combined ;) I have a customer whose watch will probably cover me for, oh, 10 years of gadgets. 8O

As long as you spend your money wisely, and are happy with spending it on PDAs as opposed to something else, there's nothing wrong with it. :)

At least, I keep telling myself that... You do not want to know how much I've spent on my Pocket PCs over the years.

I spent heaps more on my last device than this one. I had a 3970 and bought the keyboard, 256Mb SD Card, screen protectors, tonnes of software, etc.

I sold the keyboard with the device and kept the memory and software. So far I have only bought screen protectors, WiFi card and a mini sync cable. Heh - I said only 8O - it is actually quite a lot  .

Writing your own software is a good idea...... :D

I think I am the king of spenders. I'm pretty sure I've spent close to $2000 in the last three years. And I don't even have a PDA now.

aside from some 256mb SD crards (2) and a 128mb back up SD card I noticed that software was far more expansive than all the other goodies put together.

I initially spent $1100 for the PocketPC, Expansion pack plus, Toshiba Hard drive, WIFI PC card, 256mb memory and case.

Spent another $400 on software, too many games on hand.

Then add more hardware and cases, $200

Total = $1600

YIKES. I didn't know that until I actually think about it.
