They've given away a TON of cool books this summer - it's been a great ride!

I hope that the MS promotion is going to help eBooks become more mainstream, I've certainly ehanced my liberary nicely thanks to this.

There are some problems with the campaign of course, not least the fact that most people are unaware of it and the difficulties of actually downloading and opening the books.

I wonder how many new eBook fans this promotion has created?

Me for one, although not necessarily a fan of MS Reader. I've begun converting to Mobipocket. Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy is the free one this past summer that really got me interested. Now I can't stop. Fighting Ali, Shoeless Joe, A Short History of Nearly Everything...the list goes on.

They have done a great job of selecting books...

I would imagine that just about anyone could have found a book that appealed to their reading tastes...

If they knew about it, that is...

Yes they have Steve. Obviously some weeks have had more books to my taste than others, but the point was clearly to appeal to the most diverse range of preferences. It's also mean't that I have read a few books that I wouldn't normally, must be good.

I think we still have a few weeks left as well, we will all have some good reading to keep us going through the winter.

And I (or one of the 'Thoughts members) will post about it every week until the giveaway is over...

The last weeks books (the ones Steve mentions) are still on the MS Reader site. http://www.microsoft.com/reader/promotions/free_shop.asp

If you want them, download them quick because at some time today they will be replaced. There is no way to get the earlier ones.

It's not possible for someone to e-mail you the files. You have to download them to your own activated PC. Although they are free from MS they do have the latest version of the DMS.

I really wonder if someone at MS promised publishers that MS .LITs would become s-e-c-u-r-e and Convert LIT was going to die off. It hasn't. Version 1.5 is out. And MS is finding itself in a sort of "ro-sham-bo" (rock-scissors-paper) game with an anonymous programmer ... which does not make secure .LITs seem very friggin' secure at all.

So ... is anyone surprised that the "summer 2003" promotion has been stalled indefinitely? It's October. Game over.

Sigh, it is all so incredibly annoying. DRM will never work, it is always an ongoing battle between the publishers and the crackers.

If I have to re-activate my MS Reader AGAIN I will scream!

I understand that they want to secure their work, and I understand the need they have to get paid, but when will the publichers realize that they will only ever have a temporary head start over the crackers. It is insane!

I hope this isn't the end of the free books promotion, I jumped in late and only managed to download the last few weeks. Some great books there.

So has anyone heard what happened to their schedule? How much longer does this goodness last, anyway?
