It features a sleek design and a Windows-like interface. PocketWin is made with Macromedia Flash (<a href="www.macromedia.com">www.macromedia.com</a>) and requires Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC installed. It also requires FlashAssist installed to launch. Get FlashAssist from <a href="www.antmobile.com">www.antmobile.com</a>. Some cool features PocketWin has are:<br /><br />• Use desktop wallpaper (just like on a big PC!!) <br />• Use and create your own screensavers <br />• Use and create your own icons with almost any image editor <br />• Use and create your own JPEG wallpapers <br />• Download additional skins, screensavers, icons and wallpapers <br />• Covers your full screen <br />• Shows battery power and available memory <br />• Looks and feels like a real desktop! <br />• Now supports plugins!"<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/pocketwin.jpg" /> <br /><br />I'm not sure why you'd want to do this to your Pocket PC - perhaps just because you can. I have to admire the creativity of the developer though - considering the entire thing is a Flash container, this is very impressive work, and quite inexpensive at $6.99. From the screenshots, it looks nice. Can you dock the appbar to the side or top of the screen? On my WinXP and 2003 server, I always move mine to the top (more intuitive for me.)

It kinda makes the Pocket PC look like a Tablet PC.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I've always thought that trying to emulate a desktop OS at all costs is a poor means of designing a PDA interface. The requirements (mostly of a much smaller screen) are quite different.

On the other hand, this is an impressive use of Flash. 8)

Odd - I'm still waiting for someone to (properly - none of this mess that Win9x introduced) replicate the brilliant design of the PPC Today Screen (modules and all) on the desktop PC!!! One the main reasons to look forward to Win2005/Longhorn...! 8)

Actually, I think this could be useful for alot of people. While this is not the optimal interface for a PPC, it is familiar. Someone that can use a desktop could pretty much use this interface without a problem. I think by the name Pocket PC, new users might expect it to look like their PC. Of course those users are not going to probably ever see this or know how to install it.

Cool though from the W?BIC school of thought.

The Outlook Today screen is pretty close... it is not a shell replacement for Explorer, but does do much of what the Today screen does on the Pocket PC. Too bad more people don't write plug-ins for the Outlook Today screen.

Btw, did anyone ever make some templates to use for the Outlook Today screen? I was always wondering about that...

This should be popular with the old diehard WinCE crowd who long for the days of Palm-size PCs.

I think it looks great! Very nice job to the developer and way to go on the price, I appreciate people who don't try to mug potential customers.

(To see what I mean by mugging look at these guys - http://www.odysseyinc.com/, $90 for a PIM, good luck)

8O It wants 8MB of RAM to run in. That's more than the .NET CF on Pocket PC 2002 sucked up when in use, iirc.

Yeah... very funny... good stuff though going to all that effort to make a fake webiste devoted to an absurdly priced PIM replacement that looks worse than either PI or AF several iterations back... that is what you did...? Right...? 8O

How can anyone get away with this...especially with such a grotesque interface!!

http://www.odysseyinc.com - one word why?

Ok two more words - how much!?

This link has probably given them more traffic than they've seen in months

The traffic is an unfortunate side effect.

I remember looking at this ages ago. They must be selling some to still be around and making new versions. Then again, they probably only need to sell a small number of versions to justify the expense.

I think I even downloaded a trial of an earlier version and wasn't that impressed with it. Oh well, to each his own I suppose.

When I had a Handheld PC (Jornada 720) this was the only option but they have competition now, they have to get a grip. They have a few good features, I love the phone call feature and the info center but visually power wise it can’t touch pocket informant.

On the subject of the original program this thread was about (sorry for the wicked tangent I started). I downloaded this program and all the stuff that goes with it and I would have to list it as pretty much unusable. It is soooo slow (tested on a Toshiba e740 – 400 mhz). I try to open the menu and have to wait and wait. The other thing is that the amount of effort to program every menu is not cool. I figure to make this thing fully populated to run all my apps, it could take 4 hours. Not an option. Nice look, bad functionality (for me).

Ahhh, brings me back to my BE-300 days and EpodXP.

I personally am all about customization and tricking my friends into believing I installed XP on my Pocket PC:D

You got to remember that Pocket On-Schedule does things nothing on a Pocket PC can. Like sync records on a field basis, sync items based on Exchange public folders, sync multiple folders of contacts/schedules etc. It is expensive, but it is targeted at the enterprise and the enterprise alone. To be able to carry your complete Exchange based data (and not just the user data like the standard solutions, or other PIM replacements do), and have a good sync tool, is worth a lot to some...

Ah, but for newbies to the PPC world, the fimilar interface might be well suited to them..

That is what I was thinking. THere is a reason the menus belong at the bottom and the start menu at the top and why it is different from how a desktop works. :confused totally:

While I haven't downloaded it myself, I'm assuming that as Jason mentioned it requires Flash Assist to run independently and Macromedia Flash Player 6 installed to run at all. (Flash files normally need to be viewed from within Pocket IE). If it works like other Flash products I'm assuming it doesn't need to be installed itself at all.

it said on palmgear.com that you have to run pocketwin.ink. all of the files in the .zip i downloaded are .number files. There is no .ink? Has anyone else had this problem?

What I like the most about this are the cascading menus. If the current OS could at least support that, it would lessen the need for a Today screen program launcher.
