It's also a great page-turner.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20030903-SnowCrash.jpg" /><br /><br />Until September 8th, Fictionwise is offering a 100% micropay rebate on the purchase of Snow Crash, which means that the whole amount you spend towards Snow Crash can be used towards the purchase of other books there as well. If you're a frequent ebook reader, you might want to check this deal out.

Plus, if you're a Buywise member (as I am) you can get The Diamond Age with the same deal.

Buywise membership is $29.95 per year and, next to Pocket PC Thoughts, is the best money I spend on my handheld. If you buy a lot of ebooks, it really is worth checking out. http://www.fictionwise.com/buywise.htm

But Ive read both of these already! Its just a scam to get our money in their micro-payment system.

What on earth are you talking about? You're not obligated to buy the book. If you've read it, then by all means don't buy it. That doesn't make it a scam. :?

 Please. As Janak said, no one is forcing you to buy this book.

For those that haven't read it, this is really one of the best written, most original near-future sci-fi books I've ever read, and the sequel is just as good. It's worth signing up JUST to get these books.

Darn! I got all excited and the realised that it was Snow Crash and not Cryptonomicon... :?

I've read Snow Crash and it is brilliant! The hero has the best name ever in Hiro Protagonist.

At that price it's worth buying for the first chapter all about the Cosanostra Pizza Company...

OK people, it was just a semi-serious joke! :werenotworthy:

What I was alluding to, was of course that anybody who was interested in that particular genre (like me) would most certainly have read it already. I mean, how could anyone not have ready Snow crash or especially the Diamond Age yet?.

So maybe scam was too strong a work, but its obviously a promotion to get people who have read the book already, to place some money in their micropayment bank, and get used to buying things using the micropayment system.

The thinking they must be encouraging would be "mmm, Ive read that already, but its actually free!! so Ill just buy it again in ebook form. I'll use the rebate to buy something else.." when you were probably not intending to buy anything or use their micropayment to start with.

So OK, promotion, not scam.

Not everybody has read these yet. I've been waiting for them to come out in e-book form.

Woo hoo!

Anyway, I think the Micropay rebate is a good deal. Sure, you're not getting any money back, but it does go into your Micropay account which you can use to buy more eBooks. The only way this isn't a good deal is if you're not a frequent ebook reader.

Ah.. then you not a true fan! I love cyberpunk, and regularly search amazon and peanut press for keywords like nanotech and uploading etc. There has been disappointingly little out recently.

The last one I read was Slant, which I had started many years ago, but never finished in paper form.

A nice promotion indeed! I got both books for a net outlay of about $1.50.

I will certainly use the Micropay amount on something in the future - but only when I have finished reading the 20 or more books that I already have accumulated.

Sure looks interesting. But I think I'll feel too lazy to get anything from a store before I finish all the books that Baen has to offer me for free

Mobile planet and fictionwise recently announced a partnership. By using the coupon code MOBILE, you can get 50% off of the buywise club membership price!

Thanks lowair. :D

I wasn't sure it was worth the thirty dollars because I do more of my ebook buying at PeanutPress, but at half price it's definitely worth it, especially with the free ebook you get for joining.

Thanks, Lowair! :werenotworthy:

I just re-upped for two years which would regularly cost $54.95 for a net of $17.48 with the 50% off and $10 rebate for renewing early. PLUS with the two coupons for free ebooks I could (if I find two $10 books) end up with two more years of membership with them paying ME $2.52.

This just reinforces my feeling that Fictionwise offers a great deal for those of us who buy lots of ebooks.

Indeed they do. I am torn between wishing they had yet more titles that I want, and wishing they don't add any more because I have enough for several months of reading already!

It's out of their control, but more and more seemingly "big-name" releases are coming out secure-only...

Personally I'm not really immersed in the book trade itself -- the national best-seller lists, what's the newest industry blockbuster, the "in" or "must-read" titles for a particular genre, etc. How do you guys keep up on that sort of thing? I'm curious (long as it doesn't take too much time or effort).

I'm happy just catching up on scifi reading (ebooks are great that way), I start with like Nebula/Hugo stuff, and whatever else catches my fancy. Even old stuff, I don't care as long as it's new to me and a great book  Admittedly though I've worked through a lot of the old works so I'm facing a transition...

I really don't try to keep up with the latest bestsellers either. When I first joined Fictionwise about three or four years ago, the main thing they did was sci-fi and fantasy and to this day, that is the bulk of what I buy there -- along with the occasional biography or non-fiction book.

Now more new releases are coming out in secure formats, which is great for the ebook industry as it means it will help the industry continue to grow.

Now if we could just get Tom Clancy on board . . .

So I finally purchased a secure format from Fictionwise. And discovered that apparently FW doesn't check and block previously purchased secure ebooks from being added to the cart again? That checking feature has saved me many times in the past (w/ nonsecure ebooks) since I've a really bad memory for the titles of short stories...

I've noticed that, too. I think it's because they have multiple secure formats and they figure someone may want the same book in the different formats

^ Oh that makes sense, thanks :) :|

I guess I can appreciate that FW is probably bound by various licensing quirks of secure titles, outside their control...

 Great, I got this and go to download the MS Reader version, and it says I need updating to the new reader, so I install the new readers on PC and PPC2003 and reactivate them and I go to download them and it tells me I need to update

You cannot yet download because your Microsoft Reader configuration needs to be updated to read premium Microsoft Reader eBooks. Click here to update Microsoft Reader.

I ran into the same problem there. Eventually I figured out that the email address I had with Fictionwise and the Passport ID I registered Reader with were different. So I created a new Passport ID, re-registered my Reader and downloaded the book and all was well.

Not an ideal solution, though, as now I have to re-re-register my old ID if I want to read my other ebooks

Thanks, I tried putting my account email and passport email to the same thing, but I still get the same problem.

I can't even get to activate Reader on the PC because as soon as its installed and loaded it shows that it is already activate :(

Wish I had just stuck with the Palm Reader documents

Hmm, I don't think your Fictionwise email matters, mine is different from Passport email. I'm guessing when you download the secure .lit, it just checks it into your activated Passport cookie in your system, or something...

I downloaded Snow Crash in the Secure Palm Reader format and loaded it on my PPC. When I try to open it, however, it asks for an eight character password, not my credit card number as it has for books in the past. Has Palm Reader changed it's security without my knowing it? What's going on here?

I'm fixing to finally install Palm Reader, thanks for the heads-up, I'll keep an eye out for any security licensing changes.

Reason is, Fictionwise's Hominids isn't available in Secure MS Reader :)

OK - I upgraded my reader from version 1.something to 1.3.2 and everything is OK.
