Microsoft's mechanical response for WM9 codec compatibility: "Another great reason to upgrade now!"

... if you re-encode the WMV9 media with Windows Media Encoder 9 and select Voice Quality Audio (rather than CD quality) and Windows Media Video V8, not 9.

So, in essense you're converting a WMV9 into a WMV8 but it will play on any Pocket PC that way. A straight WMV9 media will only play on a WM2003 device, not a PPC2002 device.

That is an option, but the new codec provides better video at the same bitrate, so you're sacrificing quality. You could use a slightly higher bit rate than normal, and you would get roughly equivilent results, however.

I used dBpowerAMP (www.dbpoweramp.com) with the WMAv9 codec (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm) to encode a bunch of stuff as WMAv9 and it all played on my 3670.

But the new codec will not play on a PPC2002 device, period. That's where we're stuck at. Playing with WMV8 bitrates can help a little, though I've noticed that my 400MHz can only do so much before the video becomes choppy. Even those XBox videos from Plus! Sync and Go are just terrible; I'm assuming they play much smoother with WM2003.

You can always just do what I do - take the best WMV9 source you can find, and convert it into a nice DivX AVI for PPC :)
