View Full Version : How Much Time Do You Spend On PPCT?

Janak Parekh

Kati helpfully reminded me that this is my 5,000th post here on Pocket PC Thoughts, and suggested that I'd better make it good. ;) So here goes: it's obvious I have no life here if I have time to make 5,000 posts (and Jason has less than no life ), but I'm curious as to how much time the rest of you spend on this little home of ours.

(By the way, I'm proud to say that we've got a great community, and I want to thank you all for hanging around here and providing such great sources of discussion!)

So, is it time for me to once again harken back to days long ago when Janak was called Big Daddy J and he had only about 500 posts...

...let's see... that was about 9 months ago... December 2002!!

Jeff Rutledge

For me, it fluctuates quite a bit. Some days I can spend hours clicking New Posts over and over and have several conversations running within different threads.

Other times, I can go days at a time without visiting at all.

I have some days where I have a few minutes free, but don't want to click in because I don't have enough time to read all the New Posts waiting for me. So if I were to hop in for five minutes and read the first couple pages, when I leave my New Posts would be reset and I would miss everything else possibly. So I generally wait until I have enough time to read what's there relative to the length of time I've been away.

That's 500 posts per month since then!

(Which actually equates to only 16.6666666667 posts per day, so that's not as many worn-out keyboards as I thought.)

BTW, I voted Substantial chunk of the day, meaning more than an hour but less than three (on heavy day).

Hrm. I should have put an option for that. Oh well, you fall in any of the above categories then.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It would be nice to have per-user tracking, instead of per-session tracking, but that's not officially supported in phpBB. Maybe the next version will handle that...

Although everyone here is very important to me  , I do have a real job, a family, and other things to do. Perhaps if I quite my job, left my family I would have enough time to become one of the Thoughts fanatics

It would be way cool if you could click a "New Posts since..." link and a popup would let you enter the time and date.

I honestly don't know how you do it. I spend more time on this site than I probably should (not that I'm complaining) and I am just past 500 posts. And it's not a time thing either. I've been a member here for a long time. It is true that I was mostly a lurker until relatively recently.

Based on the calcs in a previous post you are averaging 17 posts per day. How do you find the time? I'm trying to find a way to weasle visiting this site into my my KPIs at work so that I can contribute and read everything that is going on at PPCT.

There is another forum that I check out from time to time and there is somebody there who registered on 01/05/02 and has made 13957 posts. He's averaged 23.9 posts per day, EVERY day, for almost 2 years (582 days).

Well, averages are misleading. Most days I'll do 5-10, but there are a few where I'll do more. I happen to type fast enough so that it doesn't eat up too much time. Also, around last Christmastime I went nuts (as did some other people, especially Pony99CA and ThomasC22) and started doing ~ 30 posts per day. It also happened to be extraordinarily quiet, as I wasn't traveling during the holidays, which helped.

What I want to know is how Jason's managed to do 12+ posts per day steady since February of last year, and that on top of the thousands(?) of posts he did in the older systems. ;)

Feeling is mutual here. You guys (editors, moderators, etc.) have done a good job with this forum. Congrats for the 5K posts!

Anyway, I visited this site several times a day on weekdays (in morning, after lunch, after 6 pm, etc.) I am rarely here on weekends. Now that I am assigned in indonesia, I used weekends to go apartment hunting ... company will not pay hotel fees for more than 4 weeks. Wish me luck finding a cozy apartment with cable connection :D

The PPC community is VERY fortunate to have Janek, Jason and the entire
team providing and supporting this site. I appreciate the effort and sacrifice
of personal time to make it all run smoothly and be so informative and timely. I'd be lost without my dailly (and more often) fix of PPCT's

I used to be clicking "New Posts" 10 times a day. It was practically my homepage.

Since the launch of subscriber services this hasn't been working :( so although I still come back to see if it's been fixed, I'm not here that much any more. My PayPal account is now active, so once it works again I'll be more than happy to subscribe. Until then there's not much point.

Sorry to grumble, but that's how it is. :|

He had 604 on December 11, 2002, exactly eight months ago. See the Top Ten Posters (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5614) thread.

The odd thing is that pdadave and ThomasC22 seem to have vanished for the most part. Dave was #3, and I always wondered how he could post more than most of the admins; now he's not even in the Top 20. Thomas has dropped off considerably, and is at #20. Should we have some sort of requiem? :-)

So do we have any statisticians amongst us?

What does it mean exactly if in one day, 9% of the respondants claim they visit less than once per day? Does that mean that actually 63% visit less than once a day (9%*7 days - some percentage assigned to other categories).

Anyway, even if the poll is flawed, the event is amazing! 5000 posts is definately an accomplishment. I'm still trying to break 50..

Well, the poll is up for multiple days, so that should help. Though it's no longer front-page after a while. Which then begs the question: how many of the people that visit PPCT only visit the threads that appear on the front page?

You know that's really not fair. I read PPC thoughts four or five times a day. I don't post unless I can make a real contribution. I have been reading this site since the day it opened. Posting only means that you have something that you feel compelled to say. Many of us read constantly but don't feel that compulsion.

There should be a club for us...

D'oh there already is. It's called pocketpcthoughts.com

There's nothing simple about a wire transfer, and for such a small amount, it's really not worth the hassle. A money order would be the best thing to do...
