I always get these stupid redundency check errors with my SanDisk 256 MB card, so I'm going to reformat it.

Does anyone know what FAT PPC 2002 uses?

Such as FAT, FAT 16, FAT 32...

I believe Pocket PC 2002 supports FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32. (It definitely supports the latter two; not sure about the former.) For a 256MB SD card, I'd probably format it as FAT16.

Janak, mine is formatted FAT32. What would be the advantage of FAT16?

Here is some information:

It is generally believed to be a "rule" of cluster size selection that "smaller is better". As FAT16 partitions have gotten larger and slack waste has gone through the roof, the push toward using FAT32 to reduce cluster sizes has been tremendous. While FAT32 does allow the use of larger hard disks and greatly reduced cluster sizes, there is an important performance consideration in using FAT32 that is not often talked about. Now that huge hard disks with dozens of gigabytes have made FAT32 essential for newer systems, you often don't have a practical choice between FAT16 and FAT32 any more. However, the principles in this page are still relevant, depending on how you are setting up your hard disk. They can also help influence your decisions regarding how to partition very large drives under FAT32...

any mem card over 64MB should be in FAT32 or you're just wasting space.

What file system I should use FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32?
It depends on the storage card size.
For larger cards, 64MB and up, the answer is almost always FAT32.
FAT32 can be incompatible with digital cameras.

While that's technically true, FAT32 does also incur a slight performance overhead. For 256MB, the space advantages are minimal. Well, ultimately, it doesn't matter too much either way. ;)

You won't notice any diff on FAT32/16 on a flash mem card unless you are doing something that has massive database access to different files. You also won't notice much space savings because of cluster sizes unless you are planning on putting thousands of small files on it. Since most of us put apps, ebooks and music on them, it doesn't matter. You only have to use FAT32 on 4GB+ drives because FAT16 won't work on a CE device at that size.

I wish MS would come up with a new IFS for CE. Gimme NTFS.
