Okay, I am sure this has been brought up before, but I need information to connect to my network. I have full permissions and my WI-FI is working as I can connect to the Internet.

Relevent suggestions are welcome, please.

To access/open network shares across a wired/wireless network...

Open File Explorer on the PocketPC and tap the right-most small icon at the bottom, ie. the one that looks like a hand holding trash can. Note that you can only cut-n-paste/copy files between the desktop and PPC.

Look at Netuse, Netrunner (both FREE) or Resco File Explorer ($$$) if you need to open files across the LAN from your PPC. Personally, I use Netuse on my 3835 and a D-Link DCF-650W wireless card...

This presumes you have network shares configured on your desktop(s) *AND* that you have network connectivity from the PocketPC.

So maybe the piece I am missing is a wireless network card? Is that required even with the WI-FI?

Thanks

What PPC do you have? You mention being able to access the public internet via WiFi, which I am presuming is using your PocketPC with built-in WiFi, correct or not correct?

I have the iPAQ 5555 with the latest WM 2003 OS. Yes I have the WI-FI access which means I do not need a separate NIC.
However, I can get to the internet and intranet through PIE but cannot get my network files and have downloaded every tool imaginable from the 'net.

I had a 45 minute conversation with the entire troubleshooting team from Compaq (HP) and they were totally perplexed as to why this isn't connecting. One idea was that there was something in our network encryption keeping it from connecting.

Any suggestions I am open to hear...

So your PocketPC has built-in 802.11b (WiFi)...

* You can access your local LAN wirelessly and subsequently the public internet, correct?
* Download and install vxUtil to help troubleshoot this problem.

See this thread, from the PocketPC Passion site, for help using vxUtil...

Then...(not in any particular order)...

* Do you have network shares configured on your desktop(s)?
* What OS is the desktop(s) running?
* Can you ping the desktop(s)?
* Do you have a wireless access point/router or do you use ad-hoc?
* When you try to access a network share, presuming they are defined, do you get any error messages?
* What syntax do you use when addressing a network share?

I use Resco Explorer to map my network drives and it works fine for me. If you are running Win2k or WinXP on your other systems on your network be sure you have all the proper sharing permissions. I've found they have to be almost wide open to let the PPC map to it and see files.

I'm sure it is buried in one of the references provided by Sooner Al, but I figure it is worth it to point it out specifically, since it is a stupid problem. Your PPC cannot be named Pocket_PC, the default name, for it to work for file access. The underscore is not a legal character for a Windows network host. If you gave it some other name with an illegal character, same problem, but many never change the default name and networking drives them nuts.
