Panasonic W2 (http://www.dynamism.com/w2/index.shtml)

*drool*. It'd be nice if Panasonic would market all of their laptops in the US... And make them cheaper... Though that one does need 1280x1024 resolution. :(

Why is it that some of the Japanese laptops never make it over here? I mean, the JVC Interlink (http://www.dynamism.com/7310/) and the Sony U101 (http://www.dynamism.com/u101/index.shtml) are also way cool but WAY expensive and imports. Well, at least the Fujitsu P5000 series (http://webshop.fujitsupc.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=P5) is available and actually relatively inexpensive...

Take a look at Fuji's P1000 (http://webshop.fujitsupc.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=P1) series (if you don't need a builtin DVD drive) and Sony's TR1A (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=k5Qnq3EpvhInpU4_LNQtoD4lZZ0bl1enZR8=?CatalogCategoryID=&ProductID=T90KC0%2eNAN0AAAD2iZ5O1mTv&Dept=cpu) (if you do). 2 lbs and 3 lbs respectively. And with an extended battery the p1100 gets amazing battery life (and it's not just hype - i had to buy one for my boss at work - but i kept it for a week to "set it up" first ;)).

And they're both available in the US.

Seen one? I'm posting from one. :D Normally these things are significantly cheaper in the US compared to the UK. I was kinda hoping the difference would be enough to justify flying to New York to get one (and seeing a few friends while I was there). This time, unfortunately not. Oh well.

When I was at CeBit last month, I enjoyed trying out the Fujitsu laptops. You have to love the P5000, but for a little more money ($1,800 vs. $2,200) you can get a Tablet PC like the Toshiba.

The virtual notebook on the Tablets are really neat!

Or you can get the Acer tablet PC for even less, and it's even smaller than the toshiba. The thing is, every TabletPC out now with a keyboard built in, even the Acer TMC100, is bulkier than the P5000 and TR Vaios. Ah well.

I saw this laptop at Sams and I've been drooling over it since my vaio died. It's not a Sony, but the price for the features and size looked pretty decent. 8O

I thought I remembered hearing that the Mobile Athlons weren't very good...

They're OK, but they're nowhere near the Pentium M (Centrino) chips.

Re CeBIT: I had pictures up for that on Monday.. those Fujitsu subnotebooks are very nice.

I've got the Sony V505 (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=AKU77UNGBkA7vnxRd-Ax5gxX3K0HrCkCIeE=?ProductID=G5sKC0%2eNBCwAAAD2zcpO1mTu)... It's awesome. Mega-fast, high capacity battery, built in Wi-Fi, tiny and light design. And it's relatively affordable too.

Looks nice, but heavier than I want. My shoulder hurts enough when I travel with my bag of gear. ;)

Actually, W2 will be available soon in the US and Laptop Inc. is taking a pre order right now. Laptopinc is a reputable company and very well known among Fujitsu P series users.

Oooooh.... And that's getting closer to my price. I may have to look at that in January when I can spend my work money and not my personal money. ;)

A good looking laptop indeed. But I wouldnt recommend it to my friends due to its shared video memory. Personally I would choose a laptop with radeon mobility or geforce go, with dedicated VRAM, for a much better video performance.

Different market, my friend. A Radeon Mobility is nice, and i know the Fujitsu p1120 has one (but its slow Crusoe processor cancels that out). However, people buying subnotebooks are looking for portability, not a desktop replacement to play GTA 3 on. If the video card adds on an ounce and $100, a lot of users would rather not have it on their subnotebook. They're really more for mobile office applications than anything else; video performance is a little less of a consideration when you're talking 1-kilogram laptops.

Heck, my PPC can emulate SNES games smoother than my boss's P1120 can do GBA games :).

Pardon, but do you know that the OEM pricing for a radeon mobility 7000 chip is only around $25? And it already has all the advanced feature like powerplay 2, hyperZ, pixel tapestry, 16x FSAA, texture compression, 12 IOQ depth, video immersion, hydravision, TMDS on, etc. ?

And the chip itself weight no more than 5 grams.

Don't those laptops have motherboards that are pretty tightly packed (to get them to be small enough)? Even if the chip itself is small, the connections between it and the processor, etc, take up room....

yeah... a little space for the RAM for the video card, too. Anyways, it is doable - the Fujitsu p1000 has ATI Mobility; it's just not a feature most people looking for minilaptops care about. And the screens are too small for serious gaming anyways.

but if the chips are really that small - why not throw them into a PPC? 8O imagine... an iPaq with GeForce power :)

In laptop's price range, additional $50 ($20 for the graphic processor + $30 VRAM) would not really change the purchasing decision ... but in PPC's price range, $50 difference would really make some people change their mind.

Just like in toshiba's case

I know. There are certain markets that would have demand, though; like architecture/CAD design. But i realize it's a lot for a toy. Especially a toy with a 3.5" low res screen. :)

I know. Sad, ain't it?

but seriously, i'd hate to have full 3d acceleration on my PPC. My motivation to pay any attention in class would drop a thousandfold, as would my attention in meetings during work :). It's bad enough that i'm tempted to use AIM in the meeting room while taking notes on the TabletPC with 802.11b :)
