It's a common misconception that you need a third-party application in order to add holidays to your Pocket PC calendar. The truth is, Outlook has a huge database of world holidays, but you need to activate them into Outlook before they'll transfer over to your Pocket PC. Here's how to do that.<!>

1. In Outlook 2000 or 2002, under the Tools menu, select Options

2. Click on the Calendar Options button. A window like this will pop up:

3. Now click on the Add Holidays button. A window like this will pop up:

4. Now check off the boxes for which holidays you'd like to add - the list is quite comprehensive. Click ok to close this window, and the other windows you opened.

5. Sync your Pocket PC, and you now have all the holidays on your device!

Note: If you have Outlook 2000, you'll want to download and install this patch that will give you holidays through 2007. Thanks to dlangton for the tip!

Just wanted to add that the holiday list for Outlook 2k only goes through 2002. To get the current year and up thru 2007, check out

As always, I am amazed by the wealth of info available on this site, this is indeed # 1
I have spent upwards of $ 20.00 for a decent holiday plug in program while the info was sitting in my desktop all this time, how embarrassing

Thanks for the info. Especially dlangton's update info. I had tried the install in the past only to find that it didn't work for '03. I had never thought to look on Microsoft's site for an update. I just ended up entering in the "major" holidays when I didn't have to work by hand.

Wow I'm surprise there are so many people here that didn't know that. (I admit I didn't know about it until I was poking around in Outlook one boring afternoon). You think that MS would make it know that it would do that.

This is quite a good trick, which I started using about 2 years back.

The only problem is that if you want to add the holidays for multiple countries Outlook create duplicates of those holidays that exist in all selected countries, e.g. Christmas (USA) Christmas (Canada) Christmas (Australia)...

Does anyone know a way around that one...? (...except for the obvious which is to manually remove them...)

Still... I prefer having duplicates than having to enter all the holidays manually...

Does anyone know a way around that one...? (...except for the obvious which is to manually remove them...)

It's pretty simple to do but does take a few minutes depending on how many duplicates there are.

1. Open Outlook XP from your desktop.
2. Open the Calendar section.
3. Click on the view menu -> Current View -> Events
4. Right click on the duplice entries and choose delete.

That should work.

Plus, when you enter Canadian holidays, you get four holidays on the first Monday in August by default.

Something I always, always, always do whenever I first setup Outlook for myself (or someone I know really well) is add all the holidays I/that person celebrates from all countries applicable. Then I set the Calendar to display everything by category, and weed out all the holidays I/that person doesn't want in my/their calendar. Then I delete the location info from all the holidays, so I just have, for example, Christmas, instead of Christmas (Canada).

I've been using the Holidays feature since Outlook 98 (or was that 97? ).

3. Click on the view menu -> Current View -> Events

Or View -> Current View -> By Category. That way, you can see everything that's in the Holiday category, which is all the Holidays that have been installed on the system.

Your way works too, but you don't get the nice filter and you have to pick out all the holidays from everything else.

A year ago, in my office at the time, we had a 'diversity' calander showing the major relegious festivals and holidays. I thought this was pretty cool so I decided to use the add holidays feature in outlook to transfer the info to my pda. I added the major relegions to the calander and synched....what a nightmare...end result....hundreds of holidays in a year...so be cautious about adding too many!!!

David

I don't use Outlook (gasp!) -- I use my PPC as the sole repository of all my appointments, and I use other email clients. (That way I don't experience the nightmares of ActiveStink that I keep reading so much about.)

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned a $20 application that added holidays. That seems a bit much for the half-dozen holidays a year I care about (I mean, I think I can keep track of New Year's Day, July 4, and Christmas without putting them on my calendar!). This would seem like a natural for freeware. I haven't looked recently -- does anyone know of any that would do just the basic holidays for the next five years or so?

A better way to add holidays to your PPC calendar is with DatePal Pro. DatePal Pro not only adds holidays, but it removes them also. This is very handy if you are traveling to different countries and want to know the holidays, but wish to unclutter your calendar upon your return home. Outlook does not provide a method for removing holidays. Also, DatePal Pro does not require syncing. The addition/removal of a holiday is immediate and requires just a couple of taps.

In addition, DatePal Pro provides a powerful calendar search, a calendar cleanup feature (to remove old expired appointments), and a customization wizard that lets you add your own holidays and events to DatePal Pro's already huge list of holidays.

Click Here (http://www.arcanecorp.com) for more information. (A demo version is available) :D :D
