BlackBerry connect?

Back in May RIM announced its "BlackBerry Connect" program:

Which supposedly would allow getting onto the BlackBerry network without an actual RIM pager. Does anyone know of any update? My employer only supports BlackBerry for remote email access - and they are still on Exchange 5.5 so I can't do Webmail on my PDA, nor can I do STMP email since they won't open a port for me. I would love to install BlackBerry software on my IPAQ!!

I don't recall where I heard this, but I believe they're planning to release something closer to the end of the year.
