OK, there's been a lot of talk on the site today about the subscription services, so I thought it would be interesting to see how PPCT afficionados spent their hard-earned dollars on a subscription.

Went for the lifetime. I've gotten more than $120 in use from this site already, so everything from here is gravy, plus I don't need to feel guilty any more about using so much bandwith.

Plus - Cool Micro Light and I might just break down and get a Vaja case.

Ditto here. This is the only PPC site that I visit with any degree of regularity. I like the format, the content and the discussion boards. So, I decided to put my money where my Pocket PC is and support the site to the fullest extent.

I went for the $3 a month, not because I don't think the lifetime one isn't worth it, but because at the time that's the one I can afford...
Anywho, every penny counts! :D

$3/month for me. My wife would kill me if she saw a $120 paypal charge. Hopefully, she won't notice the $36 charge!! And while the $120 will most likely be cheaper in the long run, my reasoning for the subscription is to support the site and not save $$. Now Jason has a nice little $3 annuity for as long as the site is around. :way to go:

Can't say no to a free Micro light.

Just a question about the subs. Is this just for the Mobile access or for the whole site? I have no problem supporting the site in any way I can. I don't use my iPaq to access the site (yet).

Thanks

Agree with Goldkey. I visit this site and Aximsite.com on a daily basis. The joy of learning from like-minded people  . I can't imagine what my PPC experience would be like without this site <shudder>.

Since I will be getting some extra cash from a contract work, I am finally able to show my appreciation in the form of cold hard cash

Way to go PPCT!

For the whole site, LongRifle. You can customize the look on your desktop browser as well as the PIE.

I went for the mobile full... the site customization abilities are great. Plus I'll be needing a case for my new Pocket PC, so I can use the Vaja coupon for that... once I get around to ordering my Pocket PC that is. :)

Call me cheap, and I may yet subscribe....

But, I think $24.00 per year just for Mobile Forum Access is way too much. And $36.00 for full access is even more over the top. I have no problem with websites changing to a subscription model. However, I am always troubled when it costs more to subscibe to an information site such as this than to a hard copy magazine. Why is it that Maximum PC can print and deliver great content to my door every month for half the price of mobile forum access to this site?

I understand that you can break it down to a cup of coffee each month, but then I can break MPC down to a candy bar once per month. I just think one of the reasons the subscription model on the web has failed is that everyone wants to charge too much in relation to comparable print media or enterntainment.

Why do web subscriptions cost more than print? I have to believe it costs more to print and distribute magazines than it does to host a web site.

Like I said, I may still subscribe because I love the site and the content, I'm just troubled by the cost trends for these models.

For a number of reasons, but first and foremost: because of their reach. They're a much bigger operation. They pull in a lot more money for ads.

But by all means, you're not obligated to subscribe. Do what you feel is best for you. :)

Just got my first e-mail blast when new content was posted to the site. I'm liking this subscription already! I think I can actually justify my $120 on the increased productivity I will have at work. No more will I have to check the site several times per day to see if there is any new interesting content. Now I get a notice of that content delivered right to my inbox. Sweet!

I've never really understood the "Web is inherrently free" arguement. If I create something (whether physical or virtual), I have the right to do with it as I please (give it away or charge for it). The arguement is akin to saying that TV was free before cable (actually paid for by advertisers), more features were added (more channels, specialized content), but since it was originally free for the few channels we originally had, TV is inherently free, so I should not have to pay for cable.

Personally, I wouldn't know what I'd do without cable, as I am a news junkie. I think I would wither away and die without cable news (or my Pocket PC and a web connection)

I here you, my cable bill is nearly as much as my utility bill (electric, water, sewer, fire service, gas, and trash collection)

Would it surprise you that I use NetZero to connect to the internet (Free) and rely on broadcast TV (no cable or sattelite)? But that's just me, of course... it really gets me going how you have to PAY for TV with ADS (a la cable... )

No, it does not supprise me. And that is completely your choice. Actually, lots of the premium channels are commercial free (usually the movie channels), my cable also has digital music channels that are also commercial free.

My point is most people who use the inherently free arguement are saying that a provider should not charge and that it is their right to have everything free, which is not resonable IMO. However, it is completely your right not to pay for a service you don't want. That is a free market at work.

Well, even though I had a bad experience with Paypal, I tried again. I won't "verify" my account with my banking information, this time! I just couldn't resist supporting the site. I've gotten such useful information from the site and I've had a lot of fun reading along the way.

Maybe you should update your sig to go with your new avatar. Maybe something like, "... and I do support the site, just not with my hard earned cash."

Ditto to getting more out of this site in return for very little. I signed up as a "Lifer" cause I've gotten more in return than the money I just spent. I've received more than I can ever say so its the least I could do.

Lifer.

I figure I've been playing around with PPCs for nearly three years now and three years of a $3/month subscription would come out to $108. Lifetime makes the most sense.

Plus the LIGHT!! I've always wanted a light with PPCT logo etched on it!!

It's important to note that you don't have to verify your account, and I haven't either -- no desire to give PayPal more information than absolutely necessary.

Funny, but last time I checked, Maximum PC was a MONTHLY magazine. When they start updating daily, then we can compare them to PPCT...

Oh come now!! By verifying, they'll make two deposits into your banking account worth a total of roughly $0.50-$1.00!!

WHOOT! WHOOT! I can buy a candy bar with that... maybe... :|

EXCELLENT POINT!! Maximum PC also doesn't come with a awesome community that I can participate in wirelessly!

Just curious... :)

Welllll,

the 2 things I did right away was

1 - Shut off the ads!
2 - Customized the modules that I see on the home page when using my desktop.

There's a whole boatload of other stuff like customizing the number of front page items etc etc but the two I listed were most important to me.

There are some, as the others have listed. But I agree it might be nice for another option for those who don't need wireless access.

PetiteFlower

Maybe a different "lite" option that allows the email and desktop page customization but not the mobile forums? For the same $2/month? You could call them "Mobile Lite" and "Desktop Lite" :)
