HI

I'm in the Uk looking at getting the Axim 300mhz Version,
Can anyone tell me what CPU it uses now ie Intel Xscale 250 or the new 255.

Also what is the Bus speed of the memory, I know the 250 used 100mhz, But do all the 255 use 200mhz or just the 400mhz Xscale version.

Don't force me back to Palm's I don't what to go there again.

As i wish to play movies on it and I need a high memory bus speed.
As My 200mhz Xscale not to hot at movie's. unless clock to mem speed of 165mhz CPU @ 333mhz

Also is the 32mb ram in the 300mhz version all there, As My Mitac Mio 338 clone claimes to have 64mb ram and only 36.5 is useable.

All help gratefully welcomed

PJ..

As far as I know...only the new WInMobile devices come with the 200 mhz memory bus. Also hold on a while longer and order an axim that comes with WinMobile2003 0X

All Axims now ship with WM2003 and the new processor. All also have the 100MHz memory bus since the hardware has not changed.

The 400MHz plays movies just fine with PPC2002 and PocketMPV. Never tried the 300MHz so I don't know how that would be.I'd suggest paying the bit extra for the 400.

I found this on the net

"The initial versions of PXA255 will run at 200 MHz, 300 MHz, and 400 MHz, the same speeds the current versions do. However, Intel has doubled the internal system bus speed to improve application performance. The PXA255 includes a 200 MHz memory bus, as opposed to the 100 MHz one being used now. "

"Developers have been testing the capabilities of this processor and the PocketTV team has posted their results in the Brighthand Forums. According to them, "the new devices that will be using 300 MHz PXA255 should be about 20% faster than the current 400 MHz XScale devices, with a better battery time."

So this makes out the Memory bus speed is 200mhz or am i reading it wrong.

Anyways any one from uk here as I keep reading a lot of people are having to return there Axim due to faults.

The 250 chip is not being made anymore so all Axims HAVE to have the 255.

Anyway whether the bus speed is there is irrelevant as the other hardware can not take advantage of it; the bus speed will still EFFECTIVELY be 100 mh.

However if this is true that means the 2215 DOES have the 200 mh bus which is contrary to some other things floating out there. If only I could know the truth! Having and using the 200 mh bus would DEFINITELY explain the amazing benchmark performance though.

Thanks for the info, hopefully the bus speed will not go below 50 would not like the AXIM to blow up LOL?( crap film that was )

I have asked Dell in the UK, but so far nothing from Them.
But if they using a CPU with a 200mhz bus speed whats the point if nothing else runs that fast ?

argh

What really gets me is I had a Compaq Aero 1550 a while ago and could get 7-9fps ( pockettv ) with its 75mhz mips cpu yet MY Xscale 250 @ 200mhz can only just double that speed.

Anyways anyone out there that got the 300mhz Axim get in touch with me, So I can get some Idea of what its like. Being out of work its hard getting Things for the right price..

I have the 300mh axim with the old chip, I got it in January. I can play Pocket Nester at about 25-30 FPS. Don't use Pocket Tv so I can't tell you anything there. I find the speed fine, I just wish I had the 64M of internal memory that the 400mh version has.

Well As I have the Mitac mio 338 clone 32 mb ram not a problem as I only ever had 36.5 anyways, and i use a 128mb mmc card in that.

Will use sd/mmc slot for more memory I can get 128mb for £29.75
or a Compact Flash for £36.00 for a 256mb. www.dcs.uk.com

As you have the 300 axim PetiteFlower, may be you could help.

what amount of ram is there for us to use, Plus whats it like for loading large files to the memory, as my active sync is bloody slow. just put a 94mb file on my mmc card and took years.

I don't have a sd/mmc card reader. would that be quicker?

also PetiteFlower how do you get the fps to show on pocket nester?

cheers

No waht would explain its amazing benchmarks are that its on PPC2003 which is optimized for x-scales

thanks

Anyways I have been using pocket nester and its a lot better than pocket nes that i was using, I can get between 37-45 fps on most games

The point is that Intel no longer make the PXA250 processesor so Dell like everyone else had to start buying it's replacement. The 255 can be dropped right into the space on the board where the old chip used to sit without any other changes.

The newer PPCs will have been designed for the PXA255 so will be in better shape to take advantage of the new features.
