It will have a transreflective screen, 32MB of ROM and 64MB of RAM, and dual CF and SD slots. With a target price of $299, it looks like the Gateway 100X, due out in July, is aiming to be a direct competitor with Dell.

Ugly ugly ugly. Thanks but no thanks. I got to play with the Axim this weekend and I really like it, if they could get Bluetooth and WiFi in the same form factor it would be killer.

And looks really big.

It is actually just about the same thickness and the Axim. I think the front design makes it look bigger than it might be. It is different though, I'll give them some points for an more origional design.

I agree that they get points for originality. And the fact that they didn't put cow prints on it!

Thick, 400 MHz, 64 MB, and dual slots at $299. How original! What will they think of next?

Quite the critics here! I don't think it looks that bad, looks different than the others, thats what I look for in design. I'll have to see some more pics, but I wouldn't call it ugly. :agrue:

Most everyone's design could be labeled original, because although they can be compared, they all differ in some way. But this thing is indeed ugly. :pukeface2:

Oh ya and the infamous "it looks big!" comment. I love it when people see a thumbnail size image with no reference to any other pocket pc and think that it is so big  . Oh well, everone is entitled to there own ppc thoughts I guess.

True. Casio E-125 was one one of the biggest PPC out there back in 2001 but was one of the best (many did consider it the best) PPC out there.

It aint that bad looking, sort of reminds me of the PPC 2k2 Jornada's...

Just wish it had bluetooth....

When are we going to see the new Axim's???

The reason it looks big is because the screen is so small relative to the rest of the device. One of the reasons the 1910 is so well liked is because there is no extra bezel space... just small control pad area and screen. The best looking Pocket PC will be the one that is all screen.

Well you didn't expect it to go one forever, did you? Jason can only post so much material before the well runs dry!

You're right. Here is the comparison:

Gateway:
6.52 ounces and 5.11 by 3.07 by 0.71 inches.

Axim:
6.9 ounces and 5.0 by 3.2 by 0.7 inches.

So it's taller and a tiny bit thicker than the Axim, but less wide and lighter on the pocket.

I'd say it's big.

Someone who isn't sleep deprived please settle this :morning: .

It looks okay. I think it will appeal to the masses and not us techie types. Yes, it's a Dell competitor.

I for one like the way it looks, although it's hard to judge based on a single tiny picture. :D

I thought everybody liked the looked of the last Jornada? This thing looks quite similar to me.

Granted, it's hard to tell too much from one picture of the device all by itself, but...

It's either too big, or the screen is too small. And whichever it is, that's not the right direction...

Just my $0.02.

Here is a larger picture from their press release/spec sheet:

It is a mockup according to their PR person. their are no offical photos or images yet. Gateway hasn't officially launched its PDA yet ("we're looking at a mid-to-late July timeframe")

Glad to hear it's a mock-up.

It is more creative than what's out there now, but it does look a bit disproportionate.

To me it does look too long and it appears to be a bit on the heavy side as far as the screen bezel. Hopefully this was just a mock-up to accentuate the creative design aspects and these proportions were overly done for that reason.

Maybe.
I hope.

I will agree with everyone else though. Where the bluetooth?
I remember reading articles about bluetooth costs getting down so cheap that they could feasibly be put in almost anything. Why is it missing here? I would expect that the next Axim in this price range will include BT. If it doesn't, I'll be disappointed in it as well.

Bravo HP, on the 2210/15. Good size, good software, good features, good price. The only thing I'm waiting to hear about on it is the battery life, but I hear good things about that as well.

The weird curve in the case at the top of the screen makes me think of Gumby.

Unfortunately, it being creative in outward design won't sell.

I won't judge on whether it's ugly or not, but I certainly think it lacks in the "professional" looking department. Would be surprised to see this make a mark amongst corporate users.

It has dual CF and SD, but I don't know whether the SD is actually SDIO.
