I tapped into my contacts at Microsoft to get some direct answers to some questions I had about the new Windows Media Player 9 for the Pocket PC, because as a digital media geek myself, this was one of the most exciting enhancements for what I do with my Pocket PC. Here's the Q&A that resulted! I should note that these answers went through the "Microsoft PR Machine", so the answers are closer to marketing responses than real comments by a single person, but heck, I think you'll still find them interesting.

Q: What would you say are the primary enhancements that users will notice right off the bat when they start up the program?

A: "Right off the bat, you’ll notice Windows Media v9 support, "Photo Story” Support and improved video playback performance."<!>

Q: Video playback performance was obviously a major goal with this release - what are the practical limits of what this player can handle in terms of bit rate?

A: "Users will notice the Faster and More Flexible Playback in Windows Media Player right off the bat.

• New performance improvements – With significant improvements in performance, the Windows Media Player 9 Series for Pocket PC now enables the playback of nearly any content from the web. We’ve improved Multiple bit-rate (MBR) support to improve user experience with automatic sensing and selection of the bit rate that is best suited for the device and connection.

Q: It looks like the play list support hasn't changed much. $10 rebate on plus?

Would it not be better to supply plus! with all new pocketpc's.

Maybe even a few OEM's could bundle it so you get it out of the box.

This is a pretty cool feature...but do you need Plus to do this? I would like to see this integrated into ActiveSync in the same way that Avantgo is setup...

"Synchronize your digital media with Plus! Sync & Go - Synchronize content from the Internet from top content providers such as MSNBC, USA Today, NPR, Comedy Central and others so you can watch or listen when you have the time. Also, keep your favourite music and video playlists always up-to-date by synchronizing with your personal media library on the PC."

What about higher-bitrate files? Like the kind that Windows Media Player 8 on Pocket PC 2002 wouldn't even accept? 256+kbps CBR MP3, for example?

if it still doesnt handle oggs and divx then its still as useless as ever. off give som much better compression than mp3, and so much better quality than wma. same with wmv.... divx is just far superior. so till pocket media player can handle thse formats i guess pocket mvp is still the best thing around.

Okay - dumb question - what is MBR, and how is it different than VBR?

Okay - dumb question - what is MBR, and how is it different than VBR?

MBR is Master Boot Record. That's the first wee little bit of your hard drive.

VBR is Variable Bit Rate. That's when the bitrate of your audio files changes according to the amount of data present at any given time in your audio file

CBR, which I was referring to, is Constant Bit Rate. That's when you're entire audio file is encoded at the same bitrate, regardless of the amount of audio data present at any given time. I like it, some other people like it, some other other people don't like it. Personal preference when it comes to ripping your audio, really.

Good explanation, ctmagnus, but you're explaining a totally different set of concepts. ;)

I'm pretty sure they mean Multiple Bit Rate here; many Internet streams are now encoded in a form where multiple bitrates are included in the file, so that the player can tell the server "hey, I'm running really slow now, switch me to a lower bandwidth", and can do so seamlessly. This way, you avoid stop-and-rebuffer situations.

As for your CBR and VBR questions, I don't know the answer. I personally wouldn't use WMP for MP3s anymore, though, given all the other choices.

Thanks - yes I knew it was "Multiple Bit Rate", but I wasn't sure what exactly that meant, or if it was another phrase for VBR.

Whoops! Skipped over the multiple bitrate part in Jason's post.

Sure sounds cool though.
