View Full Version : Pocket PC 2003 Unleashed!

The moment you've been all waiting for is here: Pocket PC 2003 is upon us. Due to my NDA with Microsoft, I've had to sit here quietly while rumours, speculation, and outright misinformation has been published by other Web sites, unable to respond with my thoughts on the subject. The MVPs on my team have been likewise stymied - we've known a great deal about Pocket PC 2003 since late last year, and it's been frustrating to not be able to say "No, wait, that's now fixed!". Enough complaining from me - on to the good stuff!

To celebrate the launch of Pocket PC 2003, every 2003 seconds (33 minutes), we'll be publishing a new bit of information relating to Pocket PC 2003: new hardware, software screen shots, press releases about new devices, our own thoughts on the new OS, and much more. I was hoping we'd be able to keep this up for a good 8+ hours, but unfortunately there's not quite as much news coming in as I had hoped. I guess I'll be doing a lot of writing tonight.

The first really cool thing I personally have for you is a review of an iPAQ 2215 I've had for the past week. It's one hell of a device, and I'm very impressed with the features and benchmarking performance I've seen. Expect that review later tonight.

Here we go...Pocket PC 2003 lift off!

No, the article isn't done yet - that's just the first post to kick off the night. New info every 33 minutes, which somewhere down the line tonight will include the article. :-)

NO. The whole point is to actually SEE it go up.

Here's an idea... post all articles for 2 minutes, then take 'em down. THEN post them fully every 33 minutes. How's that sound? Huh? Huh?

Damn...

Well, I _MUST_ be a PDA geek, 'cause I've got browser windows open for this site, Brighthand, Dale's site, etc. Brighthand now has a decent review of both Pocket PC 2003 and the HP2215 up as of a couple of minutes ago.

I can't wait to pick one of the 2215's up in the next couple of days!!! :-)

I'm anxious to find out specifics as to where some of the other sites that posted advanced info/rumors were wrong. So far, I haven't seen much proof of that. Is there hidden, undocumented landscape functionality?

I'm not going to quibble with you Scott, but to answer your specific question, no, there is no hidden landscape functionality. I'll try to explain in detail tomorrow some of the misinformation I've seen floating around - but in short, I've seen things like:

- Pocket PC 2003 is just a bug fix
- Pocket PC 2003 is based on Windows CE 3.0
- Pocket PC 2003 will offer no performance enhancements

All of the above are false, and anyone holding an iPAQ 2215 will know exactly what I mean.

The burning question I have will be when will the new OS have Linksys CF W12 drivers. I'm using PPC 2000 but am now ready for the upgrade (that 2210 is just too sweet!). My burning reason to upgrade is to go wireless - I've been doing that on a Handera 330 for the last 4 months and it's PAINFUL doing that in monchrome!

Rob tell us what you know please!

I'm sure Jason will reveal all in good time, but I'm excited about this release - at least as much as I was excited about the 2002 release! I've played with the 2003 OS - though not as much as some - and Pocket IE is one hell of an improvement, as is Media Player 9. Connection Manager is MUCH more intuitive, and the change in the OS adds quite a few features, and makes it much easier to keep up with the underlying Windows CE .Net releases.

No, HP has stated that OS upgrades will only be available for selected iPaqs (the more recent models).
