Hi all,

I'm the owner of an old Compaq iPaq 3650, and I'm really looking forward to the day that I can order an HP iPaq 5550/5555 as its worthy successor (only a few more weeks away in Canada I hope!).

I've been looking around at the accessories that are available for the 5450, because as far as I know, these will be compatible with the 5550 when it comes out. Has anyone heard differently?

I'm planning to pick up a new set of WriteShield screen protectors, a sync charge cable and a custom stylus - and I don't want to pick up the wrong ones!

Cheers...

Yes they should all be compatible

They should be compatible from what I've heard. Here's the low-down on accessory compatibility for the iPAQ 3000 and 5000 series.

Sleeves -- all physically compatible.
Serial port devices -- 3100, 3600 and 3700 series phyiscally compatible; 3800, 3900 and 5000 series physically compatible. The serial port connector changed between the 3700 and 3800 series.
Styli -- 3100, 3600 and 3700 series phyiscally compatible; 3800, 3900 and 5000 series physically compatible. The stylus shape changed between the 3700 and 3800 series.
Power adapters -- 3100, 3600 and 3700 series phyiscally compatible; 3800, 3900 and 5000 series physically compatible. The separate power adapter hole was dropped between the 3700 and 3800 series, and the serial port had pins added for power. The 3800 series and above ship with a small adapter plug to allow older power adapters to work.
Screen protectors -- all physically compatible (as far as I know).
Cases -- 3100, 3600 and 3700 series phyiscally compatible; 3800, 3900 series physically compatible; 5000 series physically compatible. The top of the case changed slightly and an SD slot was added between the 3700 and 3800 series; the 5400 series has a WiFi antenna on the top and the mic jack on the bottom.

NOTE: While sleeves and serial port devices may be physically compatible, there may be some incompatibilities due to hardware or software issues.

Steve

P.S. I hate when that happens. When I started this, there were no replies, but by the time I finished my nice, detailed post, someone else posted a short answer.

Does anyone know if there is any cross-compatability with the iPAQ cradles? I have a couple 3800 cradles and it would be nice if I didn't have to buy another 2nd cradle if I decide to go with the 5500.

I suspect the answer No, but I thought I'd try to confirm.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know that the physical design has stayed the same to allow for some level of backward compatibility. It looks like it's time to order some accessories. :)

I did send an email out to Handheld Canada yesterday and they got back to me this morning... they say that they have no info on the availability of the 5550, which is a bit of a bummer and they were estimating an arrival date of 2-3 months! :( Anyone know of other places that ship PDAs within/to Canada?

Cheers...

I don't know, but I suspect the answer is yes. See my power and serial port comments in my prior post.

With regards to using a 3800 series cradle with a newer iPAQ:

I have used my 5450 in a 3800 cradle with no problems, it even seems to hapilly charge over USB. I would assume that this will be the case for a 5550.

Hope this helps.

Don't know if you ordered yet, but mine shipped July 23.
