Hi,

I wondered if any of you could give me some advice. I'm taking a trip at the end of the month to several European cities. I'd like to take my PPC (Dell Axim) along with me and ideally use it to navigate around when I'm in each city.

What software do you recommend I take along with me? Are there any good mapping/navigation software packages that show good city detail?

Also on the entertainment front, any good suggestions for plane-time PPC activites? :)

I use Microsoft's Streets and Trips for US trips, but I'm not sure how you'd get map for overseas destinations. I would think that somewhere you could get some European maps though. Happy traveling. :D

Where else but at the Microsoft Pocket Streets Web page (http://www.microsoft.com/pocketstreets/mapdownload/MapDownload_EN.html)? :-) There are cities in several Western European countries there.

If you want to make your own European maps for Pocket Streets, check out AutoRoute (http://www.microsoft.com/autoroute/) (although that page says it's not sold in the U.S.).

If you want more than just maps, including routing and GPS, try TomTom (http://www.tomtom.com/products/platform/category.php?Platform=2&Category=1&Language=1). I haven't used any TomTom products, but I've heard good things about them.

I recently went to germany and took with on my SD card Mapopolis maps and they proved to be just terrific. Easy to use and very clear.

If you don't already had a 256 MB SD card or similar I would reccomend it so that you cna put some music on your crd and listen whilst inflight. Also Bobble is a cool game if you are into word games: http://home.austin.rr.com/JustBob

Also if you are a US resident i would purchase before you leave the US power point adaptors so that when you are in cities. airports etc you can recharge you PDA easily.

SteveIf you don't need stuff like 3D views, auto-redirect and inter-city navigation then I can really recommend TomTom CityMaps. It has full street detail for almost all European cities. If you can buy/borrow a GPS unit then you've got a very neat, not too expensive solution.

Thanks for all the tips. I checked out TomTom and that does seem like a great solution. Unfortunately I couldn't find all the cities I need for this trip :(

They reckon they've got 240,000 of them. Unless you're going to Eastern Europe, in which case - I know of no packages that will provide a solution.
