anyone know what advantages this has over the free Boingo client?

Or PocketWorrior for that matter?

PocketWinc and PocketWarrior work with Prism based cards and Intersil drivers. Boingo doesn't appear to do that. PocketWinc eases connections to the found wifis and lets you save wifi setups. I don't think Pocket Warrior does, but I'm not sure.

If you have a Socket WIFI card and install the latest driver from their website it seems to do what this does and is free! What I really like about the new driver is how it dynamically changes the adapter settings. I can set my home network to a fixed IP and set my work network profile to DHCP and it will dynamically switch as it needs to. This is, in a word, awesome. :D

Why do I have to give all my personal info, including home address and phone # to download the demo?? That's really weird....

Is this going to work with a Symbol card? I haven't found one yet that will, but I sure like to.

Don't bother... the new Symbol driver appears to do most of what these applications do.

I seriously doubt it. This software looks like someone had said earlier, in that it will only work with the Prism based PC cards. It just looks like a fancier version of Ministumbler which is free at www.netstumbler.com.

If you haven't checked out the new drivers at Symbol's site it has alot of the same features here (http://www.symbol.com/services/downloads/dl_spec24_mobcompanion.html).

The Mobile Companion Client Software Bundle includes drivers, integrated firmware, and the Mobile Companion utility for network configuration and monitoring.

I have a symbol card and have found the socket drives to work flawlessly. It updates something that symbol simply forgot about. :(

On the bonus side of things the socket drivers add the AP search feature and I can save settings based on location i.e. home, work, starbucks etc.

Symbol users I definately recommend installing the socket drivers.

I can't see paying for this application... at least not this much. 8O

The latest Symbol drivers should have everything included in them now.

I am running a Netgear MA 701 card. Is there anything out there that will work with this card? So far, I have come out shooting blanks.

Thanks

This software works on the iPAQ 5450 also, PocketWarrior I was never able to work correctly even with the threads posted in other threads here. PocketWinC does.

PocketWinc doesn't work with mine. I get this error, "unable to locate adapter."

Aha.. 3 NetGear users.. question for all of you (off topic though) Have you ever had to send your card back? I've had to get a completly new one 3 times because mine keep messing up. It eventually gets to the point where inserting the card will corrupt the display, and it can't hold a signal 2 feet away.

I've given up on them and buying a different card now though.

I downloaded the new socket drivers and yes they will search. However, the Pocketwinc will continually search/scan like ministumbler. If you are moving, like in a car, you just set it to scan and it finds them. The basic search function doesn't appear to do this. But I could be wrong.

I wondered when this would be released... The company is located here in Vancouver. I know one of their engineers, and he hooked me up with their business manager in the middle of January hoping I would be able to add electronic commerce to their existing website so customers could purchase and then download their main application.

After taking some bad (read: 'ideal world') advice from a personal friend and application architect and submitting an unrealistically high initial bid, I re-thought the project and came up with a much more realistic, if less 'ideal' solution for far less money. However, it was still more than they wanted to spend, and they had to 'think about it'. I never did hear back from them, despite a few attempts to find out what was going on.

They had a release date at that time for mid-March, and wanted the site to be ready at that time. I've been wondering what they chose to do for their website in place of me, and I have to smile...They've updated their expected date for e-commerce capability to the end of 2nd qtr, 2003. I wonder how much extra it cost them (in $$ and lost sales/opportunity) to 'save' money back in January...

Nice guys, though, and their products look very interesting. Not being wireless yet, I'll leave it to y'all to decide.

It worked on my 5450 until I did the WLAN update - that seemed to stop it. :?

I installed this, and PocketWinc doesn't seem to work with mine either. I get this error, "unable to locate adapter."

I then uninstalled the iPaq WLAN sp1, and did a soft reset. Same problem.

I'm on the 1.10 ROM.

Anyone have any ideas?

The form is just not smart enought to distinguish between random garbage and actual info - you can always fly with that.

PocketWiNc does work with my 5455 after what I thought were some counter intuative moves. Here is the procedure if you have the ROM 1.10 update or were planning on doing it:

1. Install the HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 Series ROM Update. (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?targetPage=ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software2/COL3455/hh-11695-1/SP24084.exe)

2. Install the HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 WLAN Driver Update. (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?targetPage=ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software1/COL3280/hh-10840-1/SP23372.exe) NOTE: When asked if you want to replace the newer WLAN drivers files with older ones say yes. This procedure did not work with the newer WLAN drivers from the ROM update when I tried it.

3. Change the registry key as detailed here (http://www.cirond.com/site/customer_service/PDA/ipaq5450.htm) with a third party application. You might try this one (http://www.ppc4you.com/show.cgi?softid=55) if you don't allready have one.

4. Install the trial edition of pocketWiNc. (http://www.cirond.com/site/products/wifispotter/create_account.php?type=1) NOTE: You will be required to give some personal information in order to get the file.

5. Open the iPAQ WLAN application on your 54xx device and leave it running.

6. Open the pocketWiNc application and it should automatically find the WIFI points in that area.

Hope this is of help to some. I really like this application so far and will probably buy it.

The key thing for all you people getting the "unable to locate adapter." is to make sure you enable WiFi in the Wireless Control applet BEFORE openeing PocketWINc.

Thanks for your post! It was helpful. I do have just a few other questions...

I wanted to know while using PocketWinC with my Socket card and Axim...it shows some available networks, etc.

Do all I need to do is click on them and it will automatically connect? As of yet, I have been unable to check/send e-mail access the net, etc.

Is there any other settings that I need to change in Settings/Connections? I also use the Axim to connect to net with my Sprint PCS phone and Gomadic cable...

Just wanted to see what else I need to do to get connected and check e-mail.

Thanks in advance for your help!
