I was laughing WITH the kid, not at him. Really. I was just as big of a geek. Ok, I actually got BIGGER later in life, but I was a geek all right!

I must feel sorry for the kid to have that posted for everyone to see.

I also couldn't help but laugh harder than I have in a long time and thank god I never had access to a video camera to tape me when I was in high school...I too was somewhat of a geek in highschool.

The force is nonexistent in this one, Obi-Wan.

Steve (as if I'm one to talk :-))

Oh ya - he'll live that one down...maybe...some day...though probably not before the video is brought out for something nice and public like his wedding reception.

I wonder if I took the original footage and submitted it to "America's Funniest Home Videos" if I could win some money. :-)

Steve

P.S. If anybody else does this, you have to split the money with me. :-D

You know, I didn't even think of the severity of this. At high-school graduation, at his wedding, at his anniversary... he'll never escape!

Gods. Reminds me of a Star Wars costume I used to do in '77, '78. Exotic bathrobe, gas mask, animal ears cap, military surplus gunnery gloves, sam browne belt, toy machine gun painted and fitted with greeblies ... somewhere there is a pic of me in this getup. Just another Mos Eisley cantina hoodlum.

Funny thing is, considering how low-tech some of the 2nd unit and background costumes and props were for the first film, my homespun effort didn't look too different.

They found the kid and interviewed him. Turns out he would someday like an iPod, so they took up a PayPal collection to buy him one. I guess it's the least that could be done, as so many people had a good laugh at his expense.

Nice! Ok, everyone monitoring this thread, cough up $5 for the kid - it's the right thing to do.

Here's a Wired article on the money collection for the kid:

http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,58881,00.html

Weird thing is....I have a feeling many people on this website were not laughing at him persay, but relating to their own days as kids doing something very similar.

And a New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/19/technology/19VIDEO.html) article. This has become, for better or worse, a part of Internet folklore, up there with the dancing baby thing (which, BTW, I never really got into).

Someone also conducted an interview of him (http://www.jish.nu/2003_05_01_archive.php#200287473) and raised enough money for an iPod for the kid.

That's great!! It's good to see them raising some money to reward this kid. It's at over $1000!! More than enough for an iPod I would think. I'm considering chipping in a bit.

It's also good to see in the interview that he doesn't seem to be bitter or traumatized by it. He even was complimenting some of the effects added to the video!

After watching this video over and over and over and over and over, etc... -- because it reminds me of me, and reminds me of how God spared this from happening to me (THANK YOU :werenotworthy: ), and it's just plain funny -- I also look at the remix version and think "If that were me on there, I'd be saying 'How cool is that?!?!?!'" :) (after the initial "shock and awe" of me finding myself online wore off, that is..)
